sandown 500

I believe the sandown 500 V8 race will return next year (before Bathurst), and that Eastern Creek will be the final round. Its a shake up from the advertised schedule but I believe this to be true.

This would then be in competition with the 'traditional' Sandown 500 PROCAR event?

Thats just what we need, another fight over who has the 'real' race.

I think the procar event wil be moved to become their "marquee" finish to the season!

I wouldn't mind seeing a Sandown 500 with the V8 Supercars, as long as they always keep the nations cup doing it as well. It would be a bonus to have them both doing a 500, as they are both awesome championships.

But I agree with Racer69, there would be a few disputes over it all. And I also think Sandown is an awesome place to finish the year, so not too sure, but the idea first off sounds good.

But they already have their 'marquee' finish to the season in the Bathurst 24 Hours.

You also have to wonder why TC would go back there after he walked away from it. There is also no doubt that if there was two 500s, he would claim all the event history, as wrong as he would be.

The Bathurst 24 Hr race is the Procar Marquee end of year event, and I dont think there is a better way to end a year, anywhere in the world.
I dont feel the 5 litre cars should be back at Sandown for 500 km after they walked from it after 1998. Its just cochrane being narky and greedy all over again.

I think Mr Palmer would have every right to chuck a spack if V8s went to Sandown with a 500... but then again, what's a contract worth?

I still think the July date will be in QLD...

Hopefully the 500 will return to Sandown. Traditionally it was always the Bathurst warmup, just wasn't the same at Ipswich. Despite the fact TC doesn't care about tradition, it still has all the Australian touring car history attached to it.

After all, the way Nations Cup is headed, they may not have to run a 500 km race for them anyway, as the category looks headed for destruction.

Technically the 500 only left in '99 and 2000, and it is also still the Bathurst warm-up in a way, for the 24hr.

I don't think Nations Cup is all doom and gloom, there's ages for things to be worked out for next year. Anyway, even if it did, they would probably just run the Sandown 500 for GT-Performance down, and that probably would attract a much larger grid.

Doesn't Palmer have a long-term contract to stage the 500? I read somewhere that he even owns the rights to the Sandown 500 name etc... don't know about that though. As Crash says, whats a contract worth, alot of money probably in this case to dissolve the contract.

And anyway who says if a 500km V8 race did return to Sandown it would be in one go, maybe they would do it like Adelaide, thus avoiding straight competition with the PROCAR.

Talking Palmer and long term contracts - he has a 99 year contract with Bathurst City Council to run a 24hr race there. Shades of Bernies 999 year F1 deal (well small shades - 10%), certainly longer than all of us will live. Crashy is right - July is the QLD V8 round (150km race on Sat & 150km race on Sunday) should be announced by TC at Sandown today.

The Nations Cup category I dont believe will fall over, some rethinking of rules and success ballast may be needed, but it is a great series, and far more interesting than that other series in Oz. International teams , maybe that would be alright.
Procars endurance events are quite brilliant, 500 km race and 24 Hr race, stands up anything else offered.
