Yes it is. 6 speed gearbox. The Stock 125 Moto class is becoming quite a large class here. It produces slightly more power than an ICC 80 shifter without having to have a hyper engine package that is prone to failure in order to be competative. At about 35 hp it's a good ride for a kid just getting shifter experience.
A complete top end rebuild is about $50 usd and is easy enough to do yourself. You only need to do it once or twice a year. The bottom end is fairly bullet proof and we're guessing at a rebuild once every couple of seasons. Chains and sprockets once or twice a year. Very economical. The complete kart was about $200 less than the Jr. Rotax kart. Don't get me wrong, we enjoy the Rotax karts and will be competing in both classes next season. I beleive direct drives enhance your ability to learn proper driving technique as mistakes cost you more. We're guessing that by the first of next season we will have around 30 on the grid for our local club races. Right now we're at about 15. Most of our 80 shifter drivers are moving to this class for next season. I've have inquired around the region and other clubs are experienceing the same thing. So far our experience is that it is substantially less expensive to run than our Rotax (which is reasonable in relative terms). The biggest issue for everyone right now is the minimum weight speced at 400lbs. The kids can't put that much weight on the kart safely. My son would have to add about 100 lbs. Even I have to add 35 lbs to be legal which is what we've done for now. There is an idea being floated to either create a separate "light" class (where the kids kick the dad's butts) or allow them to run light against the ICC 125's. Don't know which is the better idea. Practicing 70 lbs. light my son is running (as are the other light drivers) very competatively against the ICC Pro 125 class karts. But that's another topic. |

How old do you have to be to race 125
and how much speed do they get to because in england you have to be 16 to race gearbox and they are 48-49 bhp and do around 125 mph and junior g/box is 85cc and do around 85-90 mph |

You are supposed to be 16 here but allow for a waiver system based on past racing history. We were offered a race waiver for next year. They will allow anyone to practice in one. We actually have a 10 year old that currently drives 80cc shifters and has been pretty decent in a 125 during practice.
Top speed of course is track dependant and on our home course current configuration top speed was about 85. On other nearby tracks closer to 110. To give a comparison in the Jr. Rotax at home 75 mph max and nearby they'll do 90mph. I beleive those to be accurate numbers but its funny how the number gets bumped by 10-20 mph in conversataion. Our current home track was just shut down to make way for the front stretch on the new full size road course being built. The new kart track is curing and won't open 'til September 9. It's going to be a fabulous facility. Check it out HERE if you wish. We expect speeds to be more in the range Alex speaks of on the new track. |
