Le Mans online footage link thread, past and present
Hello all,
Don't know if this has been suggested before, but when looking for youtube footage of the test day from last Sunday of Tetre Rouge, I came upon other interesting stuff and figured we should have a dedicated thread with links to on-line Le Mans clips. As with other topics, links to neat footage gets put in here and there, and so I thought, why not have a thread where there are only links, so that a lot of interesting material is kept in one place and not dispersed here and there as it usually does. As the days count down, why not put things in here and it would make a thread that could stick around and come back to even for next year. I find each year I get a real kick of seeing both historical and topical footage, so lets keep it all together in one place! I figure a brief description of a clip/link is ample just to let people know if they'd be interested in looking in. Mike Hawthorne onboard footage and his description of a 1956 lap in his Jag, oncoming cyclists included. http://youtube.com/watch?v=OqgfLlM9nXI 21 years on, onboard Porsche 936 lap http://youtube.com/watch?v=zWeLuglJr...elated&search= Ã* la prochaine |

Neville Hay I'm not sure what he does at the mo - he did commentate with RLM in 87 and (I think) 88 as well but hasn't been involved in that for some time. |

He is a director of HayFisher productions which films motorsports and produces videos for DVD and TV, and knows a heck of a lot about the history of our sport. |

1999 commentary
Are you absolutely sure that that is Neville Hay? I thought this was the
commentator that was on the official Le Mans video which wasn't anywhere near as good as Neville Hay. |

Pretty sure. The guy who has been on the official (Duke) vids of Le Mans since (if I remember rightly) 1996 is most certainly not Neville Hay......
Those scripted commentary are awful, aren't they? If only they wouldbring back the RLM videos.... If you listen to the interplay between my mate Paul Truswell, Ian Titchmarsh and Martin Haven on the 1990 vidceo, you can't help but smile - a lot! |

That 1983 Porsche 956 clip is rather 'hairy', isn't it....? First time I've found myself reaching for an imaginary grab-handle watching youtube.....

I'm fairly certain that's from 'In-Car 956' with Derek Bell. If you don't have it - you should. It was the first video I ever bought.......

yes, thanks for more links. What I find fascinating with Le Mans is the historical side of it. When I set foot there in 2003 for the test day, I was very much awed in actually being there, my feet in the pit lane and seeing the Dunlop bridge just over there. What I find most interesting with the ability to see all these various clips is to see the changes over the years, and I'd say that being or becoming more knowledgeable of the past of Lemans is to make one appreciate it that much more. I'm sure that there is a good percentage of spectators who are there for the drunk and the party, but I,d wager that a much higher of more informed spectators go to Le Mans than other racing series such as F1.
I've been able to see it on tv since only '98 I think, and am just beginning to feel that I have more of a take on it as a whole-past to present and a more fuller palette of appreciating the event. this availability of small, not-so-great quality of clips is a wonderful resource to develop a greater appreciation of the event. One appeal for me is recognizing the changes and similiarities with the track, but can't not mention those fracking great sounds of all kinds! and the 956 in car stuff, he really seemed to outbrake himself a few times didn't he, with a few "oh bugger" late downshifts after the apex. |

As with Reims and Spa, Le Mans to me is one of those places where the cliche 'steeped in history' is true - I think of the Bentley Boys, D-Types, the disaster of 1955, Nuvolari, Fangio, Ford-versus-Ferrari and yes - even Steve McQueen.... Roll on next weekend ! |
