Valencia F1 testing (21/02/05)
Just thought i'd start a thread discussing the testing which has begun today.
Good speed from McLaren, though they were in the 2004 car, however presumably using 2005 tyres... Valencia - 21/02/05 1. P. de la Rosa - McLaren Mercedes MP4/19B - 1'09"023 (+0"000) - 125 laps 2. A. Wurz - McLaren Mercedes MP4/19B - 1'09"053 (+0"030) - 107 laps 3. M. Schumacher - Ferrari F2004M - 1'11"338 (+2"315) - 90 laps 4. M. Webber - BMW Williams FW27 - 1'11"513 (+2"490) - 81 laps 5. R. Barrichello - Ferrari F2004M - 1'11"672 (+2"649) - 84 laps |

The McLaren was a 2004 car, but carrying simulated 2005 levels of downforce.

Amazing pace from McLaren, although last year they were very strong at valencia only to dissapoint everyone at melbourne... I am particularly proud of De la Rosa´s work, he will prove what he´s worth in those fridays. I have the opinion that he was very underrated at his time, while he most of the times was faster than his "high level " team mates as Verstappen and Irvine...

The difference with McLaren last winter to this is:
a) It's been consistently fast at several circuits b) It's not blowing up all the time |

Looking at the picture on the F1 Racing.net story, it looks like 2004 spec car (low front wing anyway). Can't really see the value of that, unless they are just testing for the headlines - which has worked, obviously!

They are not testing for the headlines, i am sure. McLaren will only be happy with a strong show in australia, not for a P1 in a test... They may be testing suspension parts, tyres or any 2005 component in a 2004 car, because there are just 2 2005 Mp4-20 tubs made, and they have to rely on 2004 cars for some tests. That´s the same as ferrari is doing with last years car in some tests, tested alongside this years interim F2004M for tyre evaluation

Spare car? - they should have a third car PLUS a T-car.
'19B is of limited tyre testing value because the suspension geometry is quite different. So is the aero, weight distribution, engine, transmission (I think)... |

McLaren will be shaking down 3 complete MP4-20s at Silverstone which will be shipped to Melbourne.
Obviously, they take an extra one in part form too. The test at Valencia is a tyre test for a later Grand Prix. |

I think with the new regulations for 2005 season concerning tyres means that you cant really read to much into single lap times. The only times to look at is how long it takes a driver to complete a 60 lap run so we can see how the tyres are performing. Mclarens pace is stunning considering there has been a 25% reduction in down force. It really looks as if they have made a massive step foreword. Lets hope that Michelin have equally made a giant step.

They've just announced the much-rumoured Johnnie Walker sponsorship - a few headlines never go amiss when you're trying to sew-up a big deal...

The Johnnie Walker sponsorship was done and dusted months ago according to some sources.
I don't think McLaren would be going for "sponsor grabbing" runs when there's a world championship to fight for. |

Ferrari have done quite a bit of tire testing with the F2004 over the winter. I considered posting a thread on this, as a few of the teams have been specifically noted as tire testing with last year's car. I also find it curious. But it has been done. |

I am still wondering why McLaren are still running a blank rear wing with no sponsor...

Just realized I had that backward. Crash.net reported that Williams had an '05 car and the others had '04 cars.
Although another site showed that Williams, Toyota and BAR all had '05 cars. |

So does anyone actually "know" who was driving what? The Williams was definitely the '05 car from the pictures I've seen.
The team also mentioned that it would be the last time Webber drives the car before Melbourne. Last edited by mac; 22 Feb 2005 at 21:44. |

I'm reluctant to call gaps of at least half a second "close".

It doesn't matter how you define close - BAR are a long way off.
Perhaps that might be a good definition of close - the opposite of BAR in this example! |
