IndyCar announces race in Iowa for 2007

Didn't see this posted elsewhere, so here goes - off the SpeedTV.com website:

Quote:
IRL Confirms Iowa Race for 2007

Iowa Speedway will host an IRL IndyCar Series race in 2007, league officials told the Indianapolis Star on Thursday.

The seven-eighths-mile speedway, which is currently under construction near Newton, Ia., is located along Interstate 80 about 30 miles east of Des Moines, Iowa Speedway is expected to be completed in time to hold races in September. It will have 25,000 permanent seats.
Full article here: http://www.speedtv.com/articles/auto/indycar/25003/

Slightly unusual track length compared to several other ovals. From the look of the image on the SpeedTV website it looks like a medium-banked track, so it might produce some good oval racing.

New races are always a gamble though, so we'll have to wait and see how good it really is. It seems pretty interesting, but then again, I think I said the same thing before the Champ Car race at the new Houston track as well.

Well what's interesting it's also a national series visiting a non-major state.

Should get more attentionfrom the local public, more than the empteenth race in Texas or California.

It was my understanding that they were going to take a few cars out there once it gets built to do a feasibility test before confirming this....

and unless someone can steer me to a link, I didn't see anything about it in the Indy Star...yesterday or today

Be nice if there was actually some info on it. If it's just flat out, wow challenging, and if it's high banked, typical IRL oval....Be nice if they told us the banking degrees and legnth to get an idea....25,000 standing seats, why so little? Especially if the Busch and truck series could race there...

For bigger events, they would bring in some additional stands as temps, or from the look of the photo, they will have grassy hillsides for fans as well....

it's patterned after richmond with just a slightly more pronounced tri-oval making it slightly longer.

Cool, a larger Richmond. Could someone tell me where Iowa is and roughly where? On the East side roughly am I right?

Nice to see a really short circuit in use, and probably a race chance for Iowa's people to see top-level racing. Hopefully it will be an additional race rather than a replacement for something else?

Find Chicago on a map and go due west from there...

You will see what is called the "Quad Cities" area on the Mississippi River that serves as the border between Illinois and Iowa.

If it is a road map, look at Interstate 80...

Between Des Moines and the Mississippi River is where this track will be located

Sounds cool, I may finally have an excuse to return to Iowa.

I like the grassy hilltop seating idea for some reason. Hopefully they'll allow coolers on those hills also

They'll run a 400 if they go back....2-mile oval

The only places they run more laps than 200 are the 1-mile ovals or less....

The Indy 500 has been the only place that they run 500 miles.

You know what would really be cool? Reviving Ontario's old California 500 on Labor Day weekend, racing an Indy-NASCAR twin 500 doubleheader. Never will happen, of course, but talk about a PR coup!

And something I didn't realize...That airport adjacent to the track was the one that heavyweight boxing champion Rocky Marciano died trying to land on.
