Richard Lyons
Never heard of him before, but this British FNippon driver has been signed up by Honda for their GT program after beating Toshihiro Kaneishi, Jonathan Cochet and Darren Manning in a test!

Richard Lyons is bloody quick . i was so disapointed when Tarling won the Palmer-audi championship , it wasnt that he didnt deserve it , it was just Lyons had so much talent and was great to watch . I wish he would get finacial backing that would let him come back to the UK and race in F3 this year . If he didnt win it , i would think he would surely end up in the top 3 by the end of the year .

Yeah but how fair was Palmer Audi??? You knew who was going to win that every year and it wasn't because of talent.........

doubtful, thats a rather unfounded accusation. You really think RTN and Audi Sport would have been in on that?

i don't race so i am not trying to prove how fast i am. It was just convenient that the championship went down to the last knockings and the champ leader (lyons) suddenly had trouble with his car all weekend and the runner up from last year (tarling) managed to win the championship from behind.....now i know thats doesn't sound much but i am sure that a simailar thing happened the year before too. You can't tell me that FPA was 100% fair. That just isn't true. Arrive and drive championships never work.....if so where is FPA now??? Thats right it is now a club championship with dwindling grids. Just because you work for Audi you are going to stick up for them mate.

Im going to stick up for Audi because I know that they, and any other sensible manufacturer, are not going to contribute to race tampering. Audi doesnt care who wins, and they certainly dont need the money.
Euro FPA became Club FPA because Palmer was demanding most of the money up front and only had 4 drivers pre-season, so he decided to scrap it and go with Club to keep the series alive. Racing drivers have a habit of blaming everything but themselves when they go slowly, so in the case of FPA they could really only blame the series. Its the same allegation in almost every arrive-and-drive series. Richard Tarling was one of my favorites. I recall him criticising FPA on this forum, but towing the party line over on FPA's forum. |

Russfeld,
In 2001 FPA wasn't demanding most of the money up front, FPA always did have a staged, monthly payment system, and a budget similar to Senior Formula Ford, so that is not the reason it died. There were many contributory factors leading to the death of "serious" FPA, not the least of which was the perception from young drivers that racing in an Aluminium honeycomb tub, itself s few years old by then wasn't teaching them what they needed to learn, and yes JP's assertion that young drivers with budget want to buy a performance advantage is also true, but the best championship in the world won't change human nature. |

FYI i was ahead on points before the last race in FPA.
being a fast racing driver doesnt mean winning one day and crashing the next. if you look at Mr Lyons record, he was one of these drivers in 99. i didnt win the championship by being the quickest every race i won it by being consistant and fast. and as for racing now, im not. just working hard to earn all the money that i spent! glad to be away from all the bull**** actually.. |

So Richard , are you planning on racing next year , or is that it for you ? . Is that down to sponsorship money or just the bull**** that goes with the scene .

Richard was the best and most consistent driver. One more thing! he drove always fair. Maybe not always strong in qualifying but with the right underwear he was undefeatable!!!!!

Thanks Richard for replying to my question: "where are you now." Unfortunatley, there are too many quick guys like you who do decide to give up on racing, but that's your decision, and we all must respect it.
