this track would be great for touring cars as it would be bumpy, short and fast(ish).alot like knockhill!
there s also alot of tube stations around the airport.
great transport.

That's actually an ace idea. Not sure you'd get away with the two opposing directions running adjacent to each other though?

You certainly wouldn't (at least oughtn't) get any complaints about noise either

Nice track Nicky. Simple but effective

But please no more .bmp extentions. 976kb is a real pain for 56k users, I've converted it to .jpg (which is a tenth of the file size) and attached a quick demo of how to save as .jpg in paint.

It's a really bad idea - where are all the planes meant to land?

Well, there are several major airports in the London area - i'd reckon Heathrow, Stansted and Gatwick would be able to handle some extra traffic .

Once heathrow has its new run way then MAYBE but i doubt it, although other airports MIGHT be able to cope aswell (luton and other mentioned) for one day, but shutting down a airport around london for a weekend it would be chaos in the air ...... BUT good try, intresting idea !!!

Its not the frequency of it, more the importance of it. Most of the stuff arriving in London City airport arrives there because its actually in London so things get in and out faster, and many businesses rely on that. You can close it for an hour or two perhaps (and didn't Top Gear do that to race last year's BAR against a MotoGP bike?), but not for an entire weekend.

If you go to Heathrow or Gatwick at peak times there's already a plane coming in every minute or so, I very much doubt London's other airports can handle any extra traffic.

agreed I was at heathrow earlier this year and was amazed at the amount of planes and to think the extra run way will make it the busiest and biggest airport in the world !!! its already too busy :|

The only "London" airport that could realistically be closed for a weekend is Stansted. It's basically an overgrown regional airport for an area around Cambridge. It's notable for being harder and more uncomfortable to get to from most of London than Birmingham International is. AFAIK, it has precisely no flights to/from it on conventional airlines. If a race weekend were to steer clear of those few months' Summer charters, all its flights could be diverted to Luton, Southend, Birmingham International, and East Midlands.

Still a cool track though Nice n' simple. One long straight, it's wide, and actually due to the width probably not all that slow...

Great for tintops probably.

Quick too. The back straight is over 1000 yards long, probably almost exactly 1 kilometre.
Which would make turn 4 interesting given what little run-off room there is...

EDIT: I am assuming by the way that it goes clockwise

OK, maybe I got a little bit carried away but I was messing around with Google Earth and decided to check this track out.

Its 1.52 miles long, and the main straight is 1078 metres long.
The main runway is 35m wide, and the circular bulge is 60m wide.

I've come up with this extension however. I think the double chicane thing is doable, things just got a little crowded on the image, but there ought to be space.

Image

For Richy Rich:
To andwer your question about opposing lanes, I'm sure you could do it. The FIA states that tracks must be designed at least 12 metres in width. With a 35m runway, you can have 2x 12 metre lanes, leaving a 9 metre gap in the middle, which is enough for emergency vehicles to get up and down through.

Wouldn't you be better off having the chicanes facing opposite eachother, ie. they go around seperate rims of the bulge, if you know what i mean.

Also, at the right end, it would be interesting if you used the sharper corner alternative - that's a bit different from the existing corners.

if the pits are on the outside you dont need a road in beetween the two straights.

I prefered it on the inside, for a number of reasons. Firstly, spectators are lazy and need space. They won't want to cross to the inside, and its crowded there anyway.

Secondly, the pit entrance/exits are safer on the inside than outside, IMO, and should you want to you could now create run off on the outside of the final corner...
