gas turbine fuel differences?

ive heard that the new peoject 1221 MF1 is going to use a gas tubine fueled by diesel fuel so i was just wondering what the horsepower difference is between a gas turbine using normal kerosene and diesel?

It's specific calorific value is only nominally down on kerosene at 42.5MJ/kg vs. 43MJ/kg (Bosch Automotive Handbook) so I can't see the power output being affected too much. In fact from what I can see, diesel's more similar to kerosene in more ways than I would have expected with similar ignition temperatures and ideal air:fuel ratio. On the face of it it looks like it might be a reasonable alternative.

Many industrial applications of gas turbines use all sorts of fuel. In fact, in remote power generation (eg oil platforms) the engines have two fuel systems, one for liquid & one for gas. The well head slurry can even be used - plays havoc with fuel system due to sand particles.
What's project 1221 MF1?

project 1221 is basically a project by some italians to create the worlds fastest car but offer some strange extras like a choice of 4wd or 2wd and 4ws or 2ws. the main optional extra is armour and of cousre its being powered by a turbine. no pictures exist as of yet

Yeah, you can run turbine engines on pretty much anything from what I remember, including creosote at a pinch...

I think, the first gasturbines where running on diesel.
Not sure about the Frank whittle engine.

The Germans used diesel for their Me262 engines for sure.

Ahhh, if it smells like it might burn, put it in the tank!

Reminds me of a local haulage firm that used to run Commer's with 2-stroke Rootes Supercharged TS-3 engine's (now there's a design!). In the days of fuel rationing, they were "on vapours" while returning to base, and had run out of vouchers for fuel, so stopped at a hardware shop, bought 5 gallons of creosote, and 5 gallons of "Pink" Paraffin. She smoked a bit, but they got home!!

Back to the turbines, from memory, yes, the original designes ran on diesel. I'm trying to think what the pulse-jets run on - ???

Another name I've heard them called - "Windmills in tin cans".
As described by a man who normally works in the high revving world of large marine and stationary engines (fire's once a week, whether it needs to or not!)

Another Comment

Here is another thread active at this time, started by an Engineering student who hopes to design a bio-diesel powered automotive turbine. Please watch for it and add links to this or perhaps the ADMINs can combine the threads in their own `special' way.
