Orange disc
Now, without looking it up, who knows what a Day-Glo Orange disc next to the competition number on the sides of a vehicle means?

Unless you're in Ireland and at a hill climb.... in which case it means something else entirely!

I've always understood it to mean it's a methanol fuelled car but maybe I've fallen for a trick question?

For those who like reading the blue book see E.12.13.5, where it is required for vehicles running "non-pump fuel". Normally this tends to mean the vehicles will be running methanol or ethanol.

I'd have been wrong - but fortunately my natural reaction in these situations is to check, which I did before I read Jim's post! Now let's see who's next with another common misconception..... |

In hillclimbing we take it to mean methanol fueled(or methanol mixed with ?) but is the true definition non-pump fuel ?

Yep that's an easy one I think. Throw some grass at it if not sure. I'm finding that they are becoming less and less on circuit though?

Down here in the colonies (Australia) Alcohol fueled race cars (not drivers) have a round red sticker with a white capital A and a white circle around it.
It's usually placed on each side as close to the number as the vehicle design allows. Alternative fuels aren't that common here yet as we favour pump fuels so it's usually only found on historic vehicles. Mind you we have a large fleet of road vehicles that run on LPG and we have a small red sticker on our registration plate to show that similar to the photo below to let emergency ervices know there's an up to 100 litre gas bottle mounted inside the car somewhere. Photo's from GM-H Media site. They are about to introduce a similar (I think) green label to be placed on Hybrid vehicles so that emergency service personel will be able to indentify the fact it will have lots of batteries on board and very quiet electric engines to be aware of. Nice question Jim. It's surprising the amount of people who got it wrong.

This is dealing with the current hoo ha over fuel in rallying. http://www.msauk.org/site/wbs/news/V...262&category=0 I intend to come back to the issues which a strictly correct interpretation of the current regulation presents us with, when voting has died down. Regards Jim |

We tend to use a 7 or a 9 immediately before the competition number to identify dual driven cars i.e 119 becomes 719 or 919.. And I also voted before I read any posts but the meaning most seem to know isnt always the true book definition as has been shown.. |

how long has Bio Ethanol been around?
Is it only recently that the definition changed from 'methanol' to 'any non-pump' ? tho im sure i read in a Startline mag that Bio was only allowed in Touring Cars last year under their own rules, but no other series... tho that seems to have changed this year with the Aston Martin team running a Bio fuel car in this years Brit GT |

The thing is, it's only needed for the fuels we need to be wary of, in other words Methanol, because of it's fire properties. If it doesn't mean that, then it should.
