Worst Crash From 00-04
There are a few to chose from. There is Luciano Burti's at Spa 2001, Buttons at Monaco 03, Ralf's at Indy and Many more. But for me Luciano's is the only time i can really remember thinkin. Oooh Bloody hell i dunno if he's gonna walk away from this one. What are ure thoghts.

Burti and Ralf were the only two which resulted in significant injuries - but in terms of the shock at the time, Burti's was worse.
It was a long time before we, the viewer, knew he was substantially okay, whereas we saw Ralf trying to get out of the car pretty soon after. |

My Point exactly. It was a very worrying moment and we never saw him race again. Did it affect his motivation do u feel. I understand he went to Ferrari as a tester but did he make a big bid to get back into f1

I think he simply didn't get any offers to race in F1 again.

I don't think the fact that he hasn't made it back into F1 is just because of his crash, although it did lose him some career momentum. Certainly the most worrying crash in the time period you mention.

Burti, definitely.
Although Villeneuve at Melbourne I flinched at when I saw too. But Burti was the one where I actually feared for his life. There were heli cam shots of his head slumped forward not moving, and that was extremely worrying. My dad was sitting there saying, "he's dead, he's dead" and I was hoping otherwise... |

Burti's crash at Spa was horrendous. That's really the only time post-Imola that I've watched a rescue unfold and not been at least 50% confident that the driver would survive and make a full recovery. The Ralf crash at Indy was probably more public and violent looking though.

I think that Burti's crash was the worst crash between 00-04 in F1. I was sure that he was a gonner or at least seriously injured.

I didn't think Burti's was that bad.

Any accident that results in a car ploughing through four rows of tyres and the driver taking ages to be removed from his car and suffering heavy concussion and has to miss races has to be pretty major.
I think it happened on the fast left hander leading to Blanchimont as well, a bad place to have an accident! |

It depends whether your definition of "worst" is "most spectacular looking", "most worryingly looking" or "with worst possible outcome". I tend to use the latter definition, and so for me the two worst by far were the pileup at Monza in 2000 and the Ralf/Jacques crash at Melbourne in 2001, which both resulted in the tragic death of a marshal.

I thought it was horendous. Tapped into a barrier at 180+MPH with no front wing(thus not much braking) into a dead stop and no flailing around so no energy would have been disapated. I couldn't believe it. But we all have our opinion. Luke what for u was a worrying crash? |

The thing about Burti's was the way all the energy was contained in a small area, ie. it wasn't dissipated everywhere. Seeing the car spinning round and round with bits flying off would have actually been better!

Indeed.
The McNish one is often forgotten because it wasn't caught very well on tv |

In that crash we could see Sato moving and trying to get out immediately - and he wasn't injured beyond bruising. He did not miss a race. Burti at Spa was in a different league of horrific. |

Heidfeld spun off at 190mph after a mechanical faliure, and violently hit Sato's car. That was by far the worst crash I have seen. And to me Burti just went straight on and into a tyre wall. Yes there in two different leagues but in my view, Austria '02 was far worse. |

Mcnishes was pretty. Bad that Austria smash was terrible also. Underlines the great improvment on saftey in f1 IMO |

So, luke, a crash which leaves everyone essentially uninjured is worse than one which leaves the driver with a head injury forcing him out for the season?
