Is Roger Penske buying CART shares? (Elkhart Lake grapevine)
As we have debated some weeks ago, a mysterious investor based in the Cayman Islands is buying a significant amount of CART shares (CART is a company listed in the New York Stock Exchange market, under MPH).
Gossips heard in the Elkhart Lake ALMS paddock indicate that Roger Penske may be this yet-unnamed investor. Note that Penske, who has sold several of his major investments on the course of the last three years (including the much reported participation on ISC) has catapulted his wealth to a sky-high platoon. Funds would not be a problem, but the extent of his commitment to IRL - what, based on Penske's comments, has been dubious at best, even if the team is dominating the series as much as one can dominate a spec category - is the x of the equation. And remember that Penske publicly said that CART "would pay dearly for slapping my face" when his team moved to the IRL. Last edited by Muzza; 8 Jul 2002 at 14:40. |

I suppose anything's possible. Unlikely perhaps, but possible. Marlboro's days as a sponsor are limited, and after they are gone, Penske will be free to do whatever he chooses.

oh dear.... Did someone say insider trading? So, maybe he intentionally devalued the stock, buys it up when it's low and, and then as it begins to climb again...

Would this explain why his drivers have resigned for him? |

Thesze days Roger Penske seems to be about as popular as Tom Walkinshaw, but I'm sure he has committed to the same 2 car team (De Ferran and Castroneves) in IRL next year, although I guess contracts mean very little these days.

I think that's The Marlboro Man's real name. You know, that cowboy guy that smokes too much. I think his horse's left front leg is crooked because it only turns left.

He's Mr. "I don't make drivers. I hire them."
Tie Roger, Bernie, Tony Goerge, Max Mosley, and Mike Helton to a boat anchor, and give them all the heave. Last edited by Lee Janotta; 18 Jul 2002 at 05:12. |
