REMEMBER The CANBERRA 400???
I was frollocking around YouTube today, when I came across this breif recap of the 2001 event.
http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=YgQ-at...eature=related If TC still can't get Sydney up and running, I wonder what odds there are of him trying to revisit Canberra in warmer times. |

It really needed warmer times. I remember the freezing winter days spent in the stands there, fair dinkum freeze the balls off a brass monkey. If only they held it around march-april...
It would only need 1 or 2 simple minor changes to the track to make it 10 times better too. But it won't happen. This is Canberra, after all. |

I went to the first Canberra 400 with my one of my mates and partner at the time. We stayed in a cabin at a caravan park on the other side of town, and I never will forget putting a glass of water in the fridge overnight to find it frozen solid in the morning. My car was'nt much better! It was unbelievably cold for a bunch of Queenslanders. But that didn't deter us, and we thought it was a pretty cool (pardon the pun) novelty to watch the supercars running between the two parliament houses. We spent the majority of time at the 'bus stop' (over at the old parliament house), and it was pretty good spot to spectate.
Down side was the rampant car theft from the various car parks around the precinct. My old VL got broken into, but luckily there was a hidden trick to starting it and the old girl was spared. I was very annoyed at the time because they had smashed my locks, but it paled into comparison to some punters who had a genuine Brock commodore stolen! I heard reports at the time of dozens of cars being stolen. Not cool Canberra... All in all though it was a great trip, incorporating a visit to the war musuem, and watching a session in the senate at parliament house. Everyone was friendly and we met a few locals who looked after us. I know why the event died, but with a better time of year and few tweaks to the track layout, it could have been quite successful. I enjoyed it while it lasted! |

Canberra has no more car thieves than anywhere else....but at times of big events there is an influx of people...hmmm...maybe the tea leaves came from somewheres else?? Just like the majority of politicians that give the place a bad name |

Middle of summer in Canberra can get pretty warm. it was 37 yesterday.
Late march or early april, or late october early november would be the best times. But to make it a better track, they needed to turn left after the pit straight, not right as they did (which led them to the bus stop area). Those streets, as good as they are to flog a company car around, are just too narrow for a race. If they turned left, it would have been a wide road which is just about dead straight - which would have taken it in front of old parliament house. Good photographic opportunities there. If they wanted to avoid the last intersection before the kings ave bridge, the road actually does a nice right hand gradual turn which would take them to the intersection they used. Would have been a brilliant overtaking area. They then would have been better off running on the other side of both state circle and the road which leads to the chinese embassy (the control tyre downhill bit). Then, they would have had a ripper of a track. The only other suggestion would be to remove the little kink at the end of the straight which goes behind the hyatt, but it was a good passing opportunity. If it wasnt there, they would have taken the last 180 degree bend at high speed and it wouldnt have been an opportune place to pass. But all of the above will never happen. S**t does though, I saw that in Forrest Gump. |

I remember watching that race, the excitement I felt as they showed Radisich aquaplaning off the road, then watching #11 crawl past... Then they red flagged it metres before Ingall crossed the line to take the lead IIRC. I was gutted when they announced that Johnson and The Rat had won... I also remember the idiot running through the sandtrap after Radisich beached it for a second time... |

Back in '01, after 9/11, the NHIS fall NASCAR race was moved to the weekend after Thanksgiving, mind you, this is the end of Nov, which is the end of fall over here. The temps were unseasonably cold, about 20-25deg F, yet, there still was a packed, 90,000+ spectator house. |
