2004 Mustang
Ford has not even announced it yet, but a relative of mine that works at the Mazda/Ford assembly plant here says she's seen a mockup of the new Mustang. It will be built on the same platform as the new Mazda 6.
She says it will have a somewhat retro look, back to the late '60s, (before, I hope, the Mustangs did an "Elvis" and bloated up in the 70's.) She was critical of the Mazda 626/Merc Cougar she was building, but feels this new platform will produce high quality cars. Has anyone seen spy photos or artist drawings of the new 'stang yet? I'd like to see it. |

Huh? That doesn't make any sense... It's supposed to be on the Lincoln LS platform!

It looks like the Mustang shown in the AutoWeek article is a show car, and probably will not be entirely representative of the vehicle as it will appear on the showroom floor.
I like the drawing in link 2. I hope they style it this way! Think of is as a 2-door Lincoln LS, which is a good thing...fine car, that. I'm perusing Lincoln's LS website. They say the 2003 Lincoln LS has F1 inspired suspension! I didn't know F1 cars use Mac Struts! |

Umm, the Mazda 6 has had great reviews here. I have sat in one and thought it was worthy of my hard earned. Until I thought what the hell, let's buy something more exciting.

Mazda have published piccies of a prototype Mazda6 MPS. It's a direct stab at the Subaru/Mitsu market, but it looks soooo much nicer. 4 wheel drive, 2.3 Turbo developing the obligatory 276bhp, and 265 lb/ft of torque. Only thing is, they haven't decide whether to build it yet. Everybody, get to your Mazda dealer right away and TELL them to build it!! |

There really are differences between a year-old impressions of Motor Trend and these new ones...in favor of those new ones, it is almost like 1967 "Bullit"-Mustang (Witch I love).

I'm not a huge Mustang fan, but the rendering that Korr posted as his second link ignited the faint remnants of adolescent testosterone I stil have.
I'm changing my name to Steve McQueen. |

Being based on the Mazda6: Would that mean going to FWD?

It is NOT based upon the Mazda platform. It's based upon the LS platform, which is rear-drive.
Remember the once planned replacement for the Mustang...the Ford Probe? Ha ha! I don't think Ford will ever do that again! |

Yeah, I can see myself in one, especially like the front on it. The rest- I think the jury might still be out.

They did. It's the monstrosity they call the Cougar (the "Mercury Something Really Really Rubbish" in the states). As for the new Mustang, it looks as dreadful as any other Mustang, though it can surely only be an improvement over the current lame mare (pun intented). |

I like it. It has a 68 fastback look to it. front has a bit of Aston Martin look about it as well.

Ford never called the 'stang a sportscar. A sport coupe, muscle car, pony car, whatever, but nobody considers it a sportscar.
I've driven enough sportscars from either side of the pond to know that the definition is different, mainly based on different driving conditions in different countries. Don't assume the Brit definition is the definitive one. The Cougar was not well built, or even well designed, even my neice who built them says so. The new platform for the '05 Mustang is indeed the Lincoln LS/Jag S-type platform, which has done very well. I think the '05 Mustang will be a winner, especially in GT/fastback trim. |
