Dixie Flatline should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
Formula One Pro-Am Tennis event for charity

Mark Webber put together a pro-am tennis event for TLC for Kids and Cancer Plus (Cancer Council of Tasmania) held at the Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club on Wednesday, 29 March 2006, before the Grand Prix kicked off.

http://www.markwebber.com/news/detai...ure%3D3%2D2006

For a gold coin donation, members of the public were able to attend and watch the likes of Webber, Nico Rosberg, Alex Wurz, Felipe Massa, Fernando Alonso, Giancarlo Fisichella, Christian Klien, Jacques Villeneuve and Nick Heidfeld have a friendly hit with past Australian greats of tennis, including John Fitzgerald, and current Davis Cup squad members, including Wayne Arthurs and Chris Guccione.

Yours truly, my wife and baby daughter made the trip from the CBD to Kooyong and spent a good couple of hours taking a gander at the drivers outside their natural environment and spending some relaxation time hitting tennis balls while giving the occasional interview to the likes of Network Ten (host broadcaster), BBC Radio Five Live and Premier Sports. Sutton Images were also there, taking snapshots of the action.

Most of the drivers were willing to sign autographs and generally interact with the fans, and I was pleased to bag autographs from JV and Webber, with JV signing a couple of books, a cap and a t-shirt for me, and Webber signing my wife's cap.

Never far without our trusty digital camera, here are some snapshots of the day:

Nick Heidfeld walking back after doing the same thing:

First impressions - nice try, Mark, but I'm not sure whether Australia is the right country to host this event. On a Wednesday evening, with some ominous looking clouds in the sky, the crowd was very sparse - they would have been lucky to crack 200, I thought (and most of those were VIPs).

But for my wife and I, as we're not going to the Oz GP this year, this was a very cheap alternative to buying grandstand tickets and waiting for hours to get autographs from some of our favourite drivers, so we're not complaining. And my baby daughter loved being in the fresh air for a change!

[sarcasm]Not entirely sure why that needed re-phrased for the exact same effect, but never mind...[/sarcasm]

Schumacher and Massa were playing rugby the other day, incidentally. I can't think of anything more bizarre right now....

I think the problem was that it wasn't marketed enough. I would have not known about it had I not been on Webber's mailing list.

Ron doesn't allow his drivers to take part in these sort of events which is probably lucky for the rest as back in 2004 JPM, partnered by Arantica Sanchez (sp??) won it beating Mark Webber (and whoever) in the final.
