The Driver of the Year 2004 (awards)

10 Tenths Awards 2004

F1 Driver of 2004

The votes are in and they have been counted. The winner is

Michael Schumacher

Runners up
2nd: Jenson Button
3rd: Kimi Räikkönen

Michael Schumacher has won the prestigious 10 Tenths Driver of the Year award after a simply superb display of driving over the year. He was quick, consistent and several seconds faster than anyone else when needed. There were a couple of mistake, but it was all done and dusted by then. Take Japan when he won his fifty-third GP of the year: no practice so he simply got in a drove quicker than the rest. The only black spot on the year is his failure to show up to the 10 Tenths award ceremony, apparently he was too busy washing his hair.

Jenson may not have won this year, but he has come second again! Now a team leader he has pushed BAR and himself to best non-Ferrari. Kimi Räikkönen
also showed that he lost no speed or effort despite McLaren's early season problems - he kept trying so that when the car came good he was still razor sharp.

The biggest gain a driver made in our poll over his actual FIA placing was Nick Heidfeld. It seems Frank Williams has been waiting for these results and two places above Pizzonia should secure Heidfeld the Williams race seat.

Surprisingly Panis has 'dropped' the most. Was he not rated, or just not noticed? - no one voted for Panis in any position!

The results are the combined effort of 10 Tenths voters who awarded points to the top eight teams. The F1 points system was used to rank the teams. Below is a summary of the full results. A 'win' is a 1st place vote by a member (etc...) and a DSQs are double (uncounted) votes by a user.

No real surprises thrown up in relation to the top 5, although I expect some people will dispute Ruben's place there. Schumacher wins by over a hundred points, who'd have thought it?

One of the biggest losers looks to have been Ralf and the biggest gainer is Heidfeld... how's that for a 2005 prediction aswell?

Ralf suffered through a lack of popularity I wonder?

More than likely as he's never exactly been a fan favourite. His mid-season departure probably didn't help people when it came to considering his year, even I rated him quite low in all honesty.

He didn't have a bad season, but Ralf is capable of better.

Or lack of general performance more likely.

I think out of the races he finished he was only out of the points once. But there were those strange occasions where he found his car swapping parts with anyone nearby.

More likely because he only managed 1 podium in 12 outings in a car that was capable of more, even if it wasn't the best (or 2nd or 3rd best) out there, oh, and he got beaten by his team-mate once again (forgetting the 6 races he missed!)

Michael is by no means the most popular driver on this site, but he still managed to be voted first. I would hope that the members of this board would recognise a drivers season and efforts whether he was popular or not.

True, but Pizzonia contributed less to Williams season and still ranks ahead of Ralf on this poll

I'm surprised Jacques scored votes given he failed to fire in Renault.
