Late Crates, Hobby Stock and Legends

I went to a night's dirt racing yesterday. A good fun - although a late end. I knew little about it so it was a learning experience.

Some great racing. And ultimately very club racing. I enjoyed wandering the paddock and seeing bits on cars that are the same the world over.
And the 15 year old grandson of the ticket seller was starting his first race in late crates (No.11).

To my European eyes I was surprised by the marshals driving quads in the opposite was on a practically live track.

And for yellow flag fans, they put them out quick and take them in quick. No laps lost. In the feature race it took four attempts to do lap 21. They got so bored of restarting it that they went single file eventually.

And I will never moan about a delay again. We had ten minutes of a downpour and that added over 2 hours of track prep. Hence the late finish.

Late Crates. These were spectacular.

A real shame we have no dirt late model and sprint car racing in Europe.

Haven't kept up with the local dirt cars, late crate looks like an update of the super mods my old boss used to run in NJ. Then they paved the tracks and they all closed VERY quickly after that.

I think at this level dirt is the way to go. You have to try really hard to hit the wall.

Winchester (VA) seems safe. It’s next to an airport so housing probably limited.

I enjoyed not knowing what was going on and trying to work it out! What do they do to sort the track after a shower? How do yellows work? Why has that car just stopped to have a chat with an official and is now allowed to get back to where they were? How the hell does anyone know where they are in the running?

The legends look quite accessible Motorsport, but didn’t look much on the dirt. Unlike the late crates.

Just been trying to understand what late crate means. Not sure I’m completely following, but seems it’s nice and relatively spec.

Not sure where the hobby stocks fit. From what I can see they are as expensive as the late crates, but not as fun. Look like normal cars, which is an appeal.

Looks like you can get in to hobby stocks much cheaper but usually a well used car, found a few around me for 5500 bucks all in. Late Model crates are a bit more, few used for 10-15k and then the 15-20k motors. Wonder if I could convince the wife we need a Galette sponsored hobby stock, well used and beaten with a parking lot spray paint livery

I found legends for about 5-6k, the hobby stocks were a little more getting close to the 15k for late models. Couldn’t really work out how much the crate engines were.

Someone last night was saying their new engine was rubbish and that was why they were off the pace.

Found a couple guys in Iowa offering late model engine packages for 20k but it appeared that's a full season you're good to go unless you break it engine.

There were a few hobby stock cars listed on the race track south of town classifieds, no lates or legends listed though

Late Model Dirt Cars and Big Block Modifieds are pretty bonkers on dirt until you see winged sprint cars.

20 years ago, I was working with a general contractor group out of middle Georgia and one day I showed up to the site to see a late model dirt car on a trailer. Didn't care about work because I wanted to know about the car and started talking to the dude that owned it; he said they worked 4 days a week on the jobsite and raced on the weekend for money; never for points. He mentioned Golden Isles Speedway near Brunswick GA where he said they would get up to 170 MPH. I didn't believe him....well, I was wrong.
