Barbagallo Raceway
A bit if history was today uncovered and is also about to be lost.
During todays timeline installation at Barbagallo, a bit of the original track was unearthered near the original start/finish line - accorindg to Raymond Shaw this was in the 80's when it was first re-sealed. Butg more significantly, the current track surface is about to be re-bitumened starting Monday - and, from what we can work out, this makes Barbagallo the last track in Australia to be sealed with a complete 'smooth looking' bitumen. The current surface is still the 'stone mix' track that can be so abrasive. |

I was there last year for the round and have never seen so many cars come down the hill and end up in the beach. And that was just practice on Thursday.Something had to be done.Cool track though.Nothing like arriving at 4.30am and being 108th in line

But the winds might still blow thesand from the traps onto the circuit and the grip levels may still be unpredictable and then there's the drainage which might also leave sand on the bitumen.
I agree it's a great circuit with plenty of passing opportunities. I was there for the '94 round (of the ATCC) and it was great weekend. |

Why don't you run an Aussie Race Car - that way you would get to more rounds for similar dollars as you would save on hospitality and grog??

AFAIK - until about 1979 - then they moved to the bottom of the hill for the Australian GP (new pit area was built then) Part of WA's 150th celebration.
The resurfacing equipment started to arrive this morning - we are about to head out to the track to make sure they don't stuff the new time lines |

And just how do you propose to stop all of this with the amount of sand around?
