2022 Scottish Classic Sports and Saloons

Five events are planned at Knockhill and one at Cadwell Park:

CADWELL PARK:
July 16th

Drivers and supporters met for a dinner and awards ceremony on 29th January.
Fifty attendees enjoyed a wonderful evening, with guest speaker John Cleland,
the 1978 Scottish Hill Climb Road Car Champion. John entertained, with wonderful
reminiscences of his early hillclimb career and later circuit racing exploits in UK and Australia.

Talking of his exploits downunder Im sure he remembers this one. I certainly remember well this, one of John Cleland's trips to Bathurst (2004) where he put his car on the roof having tangled with a certain Mr Plato who was at the time limping around slowly having just damaged his car earlier in the lap.... I think John, in a gaggle of approaching cars was unsighted.

Arguably Plato having given his car a fair clout already should have parked it before he got to being a standstill chicane... having already limped at snails pace for half a lap.

Watching that clip a few times , it would appear that Plato was actually pulling over to the right at the moment that he was hit.

ISTR that Plato was not flavour of the month with the local Holden fans.... he was co driving with Peter Brock himself and had arrived at Bathurst with all the fanfare of "BTCC champion flown across the globe and imported to co drive with Brock in his final Bathurst 1000" .

Plato started the race and it was in his first stint he clouted the wall at Murrays Corner and bent / broke something in the steering, which was why he was limping the car back to pitlane. So as a result of Plato damaging the car initially and then tangling with Cleland, resulting in a DNF, Brockie never even got to turn a wheel in his final Bathurst.

Plato came under a fair bit of flack from all the Brock fans and had to be escorted from the circuit with a security cordon. I think Plato got the official blame although Cleland got a rap on the knuckles for something to do with yellows.

Twenty-three entries for this Sunday’s two races. Returning after many years, Russell Paterson – Mogran+8, joined by his son Elliot, having his first Scottish Classics event, also in a Morgan+8.
Also first time in this series for Michael Anderson – Ford Fiesta. Making the long journey north is Martin Reynolds, making a welcome guest appearance in a Ford Anglia.

I love the mix of vehicles in this championship.

Charlie Cope leads the championship after the first two races at Knockhill.
The Golf GTI driver won his class twice and lowered the class record.

Overall winner in race one was Russell Paterson, two seconds ahead of another Morgan +8 driver, Tommy Gilmartin. Last year’s champion, John Kinmond, Rover SD1, took third place.

Kinmond took the lead early in race two, winning by three seconds from Russell Paterson.
TR7V8 drivers Shonny Paterson and Andy Graham came third and fourth respectively.

The next meeting is at Knockhill on 8th May. In addition to the usual Scottish Championships, it will feature races for the Super Touring Trophy and Modified Ford Series.

John Kinmond won both races on 8th May. In the first, he was three seconds ahead of Andy Graham, TR7V8. Third was Kenneth Brown, TVR Griffith. Race two finish was closer, with John, second placed Alastair Baptie, MGBV8, and Graham, separated by two seconds. Graham took fastest lap.

Iain Mitchell, Vauxhall Nova, won Class A in both races. Also two class B wins for Charlie Cope, Golf GTI. Class D winner each time was Elliot Paterson, Morgan +8, with John Kinmond heading Class E.

There were several retirements due to mechanical problems, hopefully repairs will be completed prior to the next event on 12th June.

Cope leads the championship from John Kinmond, with Mitchell third.

Some lovely photos of a healthy and varied grid of Scottish Classic Sports & Saloons Malcolm. I see the SMRC has started inviting championships from south of the border, on this occasion a healthy and varied (apart from the fact they are all Fords !) grid of Modified Ford series cars and a less healthy grid of Super Tourers.

A shame the Formula Ford race was dropped from the meeting, I presume due to a lack of entries. Hopefully this isn't the end of single seater racing in Scotland and that efforts are being made to boost numbers in the championship.

Formula Ford wasn't planned for the May meeting, nor will it appear at the reverse direction in June, as competitors are not keen on that format. It will return at the August and September events. Number of entries has been very low, and despite attempts to promote it, I can't see how it will be sustainable.

Nineteen cars entered for this Sunday’s meeting. First time in this series for Colin Calder, Lotus Elan S4. Also, first time this season for previous overall champion, Bruce Mitchell, Lotus Europa.

Changeable conditions; dry qualifying followed by rain at the beginning of the first race, and during most of the second, made for two challenging rounds of Scottish Classics yesterday. John Kinmond, Rover SD1, was the winner of both, each time from Andy Graham, TR7V8. Kenny Brown, TVR, was just behind Graham in race one, with championship leader, Charlie Cope, Golf GTi, third place in race two. Fastest lap in each race was by Graham.
Class A victory in race one was taken by Michael Longstaffe, MG Midget, one second clear of Paul Bowers, Fiat 128 Coupe. Iain Mitchell, Vauxhall Nova, recovered from fuel pump problems in race one, to Class A victory in race two.
Cope and Brown had two class victories each, in classes B and C respectively. Elliot Paterson,
Morgan +8 won class D on both occasions and John Kinmond class E.
The XR2 category was won twice by Duncan O’Neill from David Reilly.
Next outing is at Cadwell Park on 16th July.

I'd like to try to get over to watch but at 140 miles each way its getting pricy these days .... and it might be a bit warm, too

A fabulous day at Cadwell Park, great racing; fine weather; quality entertainment for the small, enthusiastic crowd at the circuit, and for those watching on the live stream.

Russell Paterson, Morgan(#72) won the first race comfortably from John Kinmond, Rover SD1(#63), despite slow pace away from the start line.
Andy Graham, TR7V8(#78) was third, just ahead of Martin Reynolds in Ford Escort(#27). The MGBV8(#13) of Alistair Baptie was fifth, Tim Moll, Golf(#84) sixth,
Elliot Paterson, Morgan(#73) seventh, Alasdair Coates, Escort(#2) eighth, Craig Houston, Lotus Excel(#91) ninth and completing the top ten was Lotus 7(#17) of Gary Thomas.
Next was Adam Kinmond, Rover(#64), followed by Charlie Cope, Golf(4#), Jimmy Crow, Escort(#21), Donald Dewar, Golf(#70), Ronnie Haines, Escort(#188), Charles Colledge, Mini Marcos(#50),
Duncan O’Neill, Fiesta(#66) and David Reilly, Fiesta(#36). Two cars failed to finish, the Triumph GT6(#56) of Clive Gimson and Clan Crusader(#247) of Pete Richards –
both were repaired and completed race two. Fastest lap was by Russell Paterson.

Alasdair Coates and Elliot Paterson were unable to start race two, leaving eighteen competitors.
Again, Russell Paterson didn’t get a perfect start, allowing John Kinmond to take the lead which he maintained to the end. Unfortunately, Russell retired on lap two.
Martin Reynolds maintained pressure on the leader and was less than two seconds behind at the end, having recorded fastest lap. Graham and Baptie swapped places,
with Graham just ahead in third place. Moll was fifth, Cope sixth, Thomas seventh, followed by Adam Kinmond, Crow, Haines, Gimson, Colledge, Richards, O’Neill and Dewar.

Series sponsor Edinburgh Watch Company proprietor, Jonathan Gilbert, presented the driver of the day award to Andy Graham.
