I don't no about the worst driver ever in CART, but right now (this past season) it would have to be a tie between Lavin and Geoff Boss.

Dennis Vitolo, Charles Nearburg, the list is impressive at this end of the spectrum

Swiss 'driver' Jean-Pierre Frey, who ended up suing Euromotorsport when they dumped him. Painfully slow, his F3000 record was 17 entries, 17 DNQs.

Also Bill Tempero, Flyin' Phil Caliva (couldn't break 180mph at Indy in 1980), Jim Buick (actually finished behind Caliva once), and Dale Coyne as driver all made you wonder whether they thought they were behind the pace car.

In defense of Dale Coyne, he intntionally went very slow. His entire purpose was to get through a weekend in under ten laps so he could re-use the tires at the next race.

His entire goal was to qualify in one lap (never take two warmup laps or complete the second qualifying lap), after maybe doing a two lap shakedown in practice to make sure everything is on OK and get a rough idea of the track. Then with these five laps under his belt, he do a pace lap, then run three or four slow laps and retire to the pits reporting "vibration" as the official cause of the DNF. Amazingly enough the car goes into the truck without a mechanic examining the "problem."

All DC was tryong to do was collect appearance money, qualifying attempt money, and race money (had to turn a lap to cllect).

Hiro, Charles, and Dennis however paid for their equipment and so tortured everyone with attempts to complete entire races, and clogging up the lanes during qualifying.

There was a Brazilean driver who got his license pulled by CART I think two or three years ago who was truly fast enough and wild enough to be dangerous. He was perhaps the worst driver CART ever had. (IIRC he was a problem in Indy Lights as well).

Shiggy was by far the worst when compared to his peers, but I think he would have been a midfielder in this year's field. At least he won more races in CART feeders than the Corona Super Stud.

Great thread, and a hard one to answer.
But not Hiro.

sgw2 just jogged a few brain cells that I thought I had already lost. I also remember somebody's license being pulled. Somebody's gotta remember!

I've always frowned upon Vitolo, at least since he ended up landing on Mansell in pit-out.

I'm gonna let my newfound cerebellum time to warm up, and think about this...

There were some real w*nkers in the 80's. Frey rates right up there. I understand he is or was in jail in Switzerland for real-estate fraud. I think he would sell apartments that didn't belong to him or something like that.

Wasn't it Shigeaki Hattori who was driving for Bettenhausen at the time who had his license revoked?

Frey.....in his first oval race, he was downshifting going into Turn 1 at Phoenix.....and ensign, you've brought back quite a few memories....Randy Lewis and Jose Romero also come to mind.

Browsing through the Drivers/Alumni pages on CART.com, and I'm surprised at how many names I don't recognize.

Geoff Boss, although Joel Camathias wasn't very good either.

Hattori was driving for Bettenhausen at the time. Can anyone remember exactly why it was revoked? - because he was too slow or because he was involved in too many incidents?

IIRC it was at Laguna, the weekened we lost Gonzo, and he'd spun in every practice session that weekend, and had sebveral other crashes during the year (including injuring himself and Al Unser Jr in the season-opener at Homestead)

I think I remember in 2002 CART parked Townsend Bell during a race (where?) for a miriad of ontrack indiscretions! That was the first and only time I have seen that happen.

Worst driver...Too many to pick from last season!!

Fangio II ?

I would say Hector Rabaque, the guy had a piteful Formula 1 run where he would retire from races beacuse he was so out of shape he could not last them and he follewed them with a less than spectacular CART carrer and after crashing his final car he decided racing was not for him.
