Yay and Nay
Which drivers have impressed you this year, and for that matter, who have been a bit of a let down?
Yay: Michel Jourdain Jr- I've always like him, but it seems a lot of people have jumped on his bandwagon this year that he has a reliable car... Nay: Our Paul- sorry Paul... but if Dario is running second in the championship, what are you doing? Sure, Michael is a point behind, but he is over the hill... Your thoughts? |

Besides the obvious Da Matta...
yay: Carpentier, who I had previously written off as a driver that was worth dumping by Players. When he first came into Cart he was much slower than teammate Greg Moore, then Tags came in and was faster. But, since the second half of this year he has really been strong...maybe it's confidence, better car, but he's really turned things around. I'm also glad to hear he'll be back with players next year. Nay: Tags... I don't know what happened to all the promise he showed when he came into Cart, and last year as well. I'm amazed he's been unable to win one yet. Last edited by Jay; 19 Sep 2002 at 22:40. |

Yay - Bruno, who has won an oval and a road course and who had the pole on the IRL 500 and another pole to boot, and who has been dissed by Chip all season and has risen above it. Looking forward to seeing him with NH next year.
Nay - Dario, Mikey, and Tony, for obvious reasons, and Mr. Bell, because I don't think he's ready for prime time yet. |

He's not Liz. Believe me. He's not. There's a big difference between an agressive Montoya pushing it to the limit and an agressive Bell pushing it beyond. The key phrase being pushing it beyond. It is a shame he didn't have a veteran teammate to help him through his rookie time. Now he'll need a few years on the ladder again just to find balance and some maturity. That's what the guys who coached him in Skip Barber say at least, and considering their quality, and the quality of drivers they turn out and coach through Barber Pro, I can't fault their logic.

That's what I kind of think, too. I don't think he's a bad driver, but I think he was pitchforked into a situation he was nowhere near ready for. I just hope it hasn't derailed a promising career.
And a big YAY to Paul Tracy for his saying "I'll never drive one of those crapwagons." |

Yay - Jourdain. Well I have ALWAYS been a fan of Michel, and finally this year he's had a car quick and reliable enough for him to score some great finishes.
Nay - Anyone going to the IRL. Sell-outs. Half of them made their names here and are now just leaving for the money. Pathetic. |

Yay: Tracy, for the "crapwagons" quote. Bruno and Christiano, for really stepping up this year. Darren Manning, for an excellent debut!
Nay: The traitors! I'm having trouble being upset at Dario and Tony, I've liked them for so long, and they're not taking sponsors or seats with them... But for the rest of them, especially Gannassi and Andretti, I have nothing but boiling, venemous hatred! And a great big "feh!" for some of these guys stuck perpetually in the middle or back of the field. You know who you are. Pick up some speed, or step aside and give the seat to someone who can! YAY! for me would have to be Tora Takagi. "Most Improved" to be sure. Great seasons have been had, as already mentioned, by Carpentier, Junqueira, and the obvious choice in daMatta. And Jourdain is showing the promise that many of us already knew he had. If only he could get nearer the front... Bust lest we forget Papis, who was right in the thick of the points when he had the opportunity to be. And with zero budget. Dixon has greatly impressed me this year, as well.
My biggest "Yay" of the season goes to Paul Tracy. In fact, maybe my biggest Yay of all-time. But that's for off-track stuff, because he's not where I thought he would be in the championship right now. Check that. My biggest "yay" goes to Alessandro Zanardi. NAY! I was taking Fernandez for the championship before the season began, and then he took the first two points of the season! But it's all been downhill from there. Nays also go to Vasser and Kanaan, but most of that can be chalked up as "bad luck". And I must agree with Jay when he gave a big Nay to Tagliani. He's not living up to the promise he showed as a rookie. Jordi's gonna hate me for saying this, but Servia is in a similar boat. Although he's right up there in the championship, it's hard to not "nay" Franchitti for not winning a race until Rockingham. And I'm surprised that, up until now, nobody's "nayed" Brack. He's got to be the biggest disappointment of the season. |
