I thought tobacco sponsorship was out?

Tobacco company Philip Morris has extended its sponsorship deal with Formula One motor racing team Ferrari. Under the deal, the Marlboro brand has extended its sponsorship until at least 2011. The European Union, who is increasing its legislation against tobacco advertising, has already issued a directive banning all print and broadcast advertising and event sponsorship within the EU by tobacco companies. Here goes Ferrari again, thinking they have omittance from certain rules? I thought tobacco sponsorship was gone August 1st?? I realise that not all races are in the EU, but majority certainly are?

Why would you pay millions for sponsorship if you cant have your brand advertised or seen on the cars, uniforms, signage, etc?

Apparently, the plan is to have Ferrari logos on Marlboro packets!

Also Phillip Morris pays for the whole of the advertising space/rights for the ferrari cars. The space is then sold to the other sponsors by Phillip Morris.

The ban is not tobbaco sponsorship to teams. Its on tobacco advertising and event sponsoring. So they can take the money but not have any marlboro logo's on the car/trucks/team clothes etc.

They will still use the Team and Drivers to advertise their products, just not at races.

Interesting.
American racing columnist Robin Miller is claiming in a blurb entitled "You Heard It Here First", that Roger Penske (IRL) has found a way to keep his Marlboro sponsorship past 2006, when similar bans were to take effect in the USA.

A complicated and interesting issue.

However this is not an anti-Ferrari one. As they are not running outside any rules clearly (and they aren't F1 rules either).

The WHO (not Pete and Roger) are continually trying for a world ban, but population wise it is only a small part of the world that has the ban at the moment or one coming in soon.

Its all about the power of association. If Red Bull have bought Minardi and are going to run Ferrari engines, then surely having Malboro do "promotional experiences" for their retailers and key clients with the "Minardi" two-seater F1 cars is on the cards.

MARLBORO did an interseting survey a while back, they found that people still associate the mix of red and white with marlboro even if there is no name any where.

CAmel had the same with yellow, when Jordan got B+H they ordered yellow paint from there suppliers and everyone presumed CAMEL was coming back.

Ferrari pictures are already on some packets of Marlboro's already - don't think the packet I saw was bought in the UK though.

Whenever you see that red and white Marlboro logo, with or without writing, it's so well known (probably thanks to McLaren!) that people are instantly going to know what it is. That's why it's still worth putting the money in.

The good effect on the public is that new people won't discover tobacco advertising from F1 anymore, but anyone who's familiar with it already (which is most people at the minute) will know exactly what it is. Having said that, seeing Ferrari on fag packets, people will connect that with F1 anyway...

yeah the guys who put the money in before the bans will reap the rewards - i'll never forget the marlboro mclarens or the camel lotuses, that's for sure.

The power of association indeed. This is why Marlboro sub-contracted some of their space to Vodafone, and, presumably, they will do likewise with other companies who fit with the red-and-white colour schemes.

They get the money from other companies to cover their initial expenditure of the rights to the car space (together with a profit I am going to assume), and they also get the brand association of their product as it has been drummed into our heads over the years more than adequately. Alternately, they could keep the space and sub-let it to nobody else and just have red and white colours on the car. The Ferrari logos on the Marlboro packets is peforming the same functions, but in reverse, as this will be putting the ground work in to create the association in those who hadn't got it yet. The message is, and will continue to be, clear. There are pros and cons to each, therefore I would expect it to be a bit of blend of both.

It is going to be interesting to see which strategy they choose to adopt.

The new tobacco regs most people refer to round here are UK rules that affect British teams. None of the UK-based teams will be able to display tobacco logos outside of the EU, but Ferrari will be able to.

It's a shame - there was that hope that other sponsors like McDonalds or Coke would be attracted to a post-coital F1.

You're forgetting the importance of Corporate entertainment etc, if you don't spend your revenue on deductables you have to pay it to the taxman!

In many parts of the world they'll still be able to do a lot of promotion - bill boards, point of sale stuff, promotions, etc., and the colours will almost still appear onthe car somehow - Ferraris aren't exactly Ferrari red any more, for a start. There's plenty of mileage still to be found out of the association even if the signwriting doesn't appear on the car.
