Why not Heidfeld to Ferrari?
Why not? If M Schumacher did retire at the end of this season, Heidfeld would be a good replacement in my opinion. That's IF Schumacher retires at the end of this season by the way and they can't get hold of Montoya. If Heidfeld won the championship with Ferrari, it would be the ultimate revenge on McLaren for signing Raikkonen instead of him and keeping Coulthard for too long!
I'm not saying this scenario will unfold, but, as Murray Walker says 'Anything can happen in Formula 1 and it usually does!' |

I'm not too sure about Heidfield's talent...
I would prefer someone like Frentzen... |

In the recent past, Ferrari has like to sign a very successful, established driver (Mansell, Prost, Schumacher) to be their number one driver. The times they have struggled is when they try to get a "talent" to be No. 1 (Albereto, Alesi).

They had Prost when they signed Alesi, and they regretted it when they fired him!

I dont see Heidfeld as Ferrari material, not now anyway. Massa probably fits the bill more than Heidfeld does...thats not to say Heidfeld isent good because I think he's one of the top drivers in F1 today but there's just something about Massa, I think he's got more natural talent and as Sauber himself said - someone has already got their hand on his shoulder...so look for Felipe to be driving the Ferrari if Michael or Rubens leave...

I agree with Mania. Nick's face doesn't fit at Ferrari and is most certainly still a Mclaren-bound boy/man, although I don't agree with the assessment about Massa. He's done nothing as impressive as Kimi last year. He's quick, but he's still prone to many mistakes.
If Schu leaves at the end of the year, Barrichello will certainly be staying...... |

I think Heidfeld is over-rated. He's not going to McLaren because they would have picked him instead of Kimi when the seat bacame available.

I would agree that Nick will not end up at McLaren, or Ferrari either. I have never read any story that used the words "special", or "magic", or some such other superlative when discussing Nick's talents. It is more like "quick", "competent", or "highly respected". I suspect many tech directors would be happy to have him, but he would not be their first choice to win a championship with.
Now in the future, when he consistently outperforms and outpoints his teammates, this could all change. But once you get a certain reputation, it's hard to change people's opinions. Perhaps if Nick pulled a Juan out of his hat, found a second somewhere, and stuck the Sauber 3rd or 4th on the grid a couple of times, he could raise a few eyebrows. |

Personally, I feel that when SchM retires, the two drivers at the top of Ferrari's shopping list would be JPM and Kimi. These two drivers have the steepest improvement curve at present in F1 (not counting Alex of course ), and are definite consistant prospects for the podium and possible future WDC's.

Alex's improvement curve is a straight line along the x-axis! He is not ready for F1, that is for certain.
You are right about JPM and Kimi, they are 1-2 on the list, perhaps Massa and Alonso are 3-4. If MS stays, and JP signs a short extension, it could be a clue. |

There is nothing wrong with Fisi. He is also one of my favourites. I would like to see Fisi with either McLaren, Williams or even back with Renault. He is a good driver and now has loads of experience. It is sad that he was swapped for Jarno Trulli , sad for Fisi that is, but again, Jarno is anothre good driver and a great qualifier.
Unfortunately, the wish list of drivers wanting to go to Ferrari is very long, and despite all teh rubishing and rhubarbs we have been throwing at Rubens, I do believe deep down that Rubens is a vry good driver, and obviously suffers in the shadow of SchM. There was a perception that Enzo vowed he would never have another Italian driver for ferrari aftr the horrifying accident to Lorenzo Bandini, something that I myself have avoided to think about all these years. We can compile a long list of drivers who would fit the bill at Ferrari, and the only ones to miss out would be Sato and Alex; and I say Sato because he would end up crashing too many cars. Let's face it - with the class of the Ferrari 2002 package, there would be very few current drivers who would not end up on the podium. I am sure that for once, even Red would agree with me on this.
