Prodrive Ford and JAS Honda were both disqualified after stewards discovered that teams may be using the tyre-heating guns, normally used to remove debri and 'pick-up' from used tyres, to warm the tyres prior to qualifying. The teams were reinstated on appeal.
Do you think that sufficient heat could be generated by these devices to affect a tyres performance? Or is it hyper-sensitivity on the part of their rivals? |

Having seen this process being carried out i think the time it takes to remove the top layer of rubber from the tyre is too long for the operation to be of any use as a method or "illegally warming the tyres",tyre temperature is very low after completing the process on one tyre so it would be positively useless as a perfomance aid after doing all four

Well just wondering, but can't the heating of tyres be controlled in other ways?
For instance a thin heating net embedded inside the rubber and controlled electrically from inside the cockpit by the driver? It's all about the rubber getting hot and more sticky isn't it? Or is the heating of the inside air and the changing of pressure of the same importance? Maybe filling the tyre with very hot air could help too but I guess structural tyre failures and pressure problems will cause problems. But still ... what do you think? |
