Bringing the engine up to the manufacturer's specification. It basically involves accurately measuring everything and then correcting any errors made in production.

I would change TomSs answer by replacing the word 'manufacturer' to 'rule book'. Engine builders know thru experimentation and experience what dimensions are crucial to a good motor and ensure those are as good as possible as per the rule book.

And in karting with two-strokes these changes are cylinder head profile and/or size, therefore compression. Port size, location and shape, therefore timing, and ignition timing as well.
