Anyone see the SEAT Cupra Championship?
The first ever round was at Croft last weekend.
Considering the lack of excitement usually provided by one-make saloon car series, i was suprised and impressed by the Cupras. There was good close racing, and plenty of action as the cars spun, hit each other and got up to the usual things that tin-tops do. It's all being filmed by ITV for a forthcoming docu-soap in the summer, so there were cameras and all sorts around, oh and Nell McAndrew was there presenting it. SEAT have really gone all out to make this a big deal. It was like a SEAT convention at the circuit all weekend. All the cars are prepared together in a big marquee thing, and the public are allowed in so you can watch them working on the cars and talk to the drivers all through the weekend. The prize on offer from SEAT is pretty hefty too. The winner of the championship gets a works drive for SEAT in the European Touring Cars next season, a SEAT road car, and a flat in Monte Carlo for the year. The prize has attracted some pretty good drivers, including Spencer Marsh (BTCC Production 2002), Stefan Hodgetts, Robert Huff and Gordon Sheddon. There are only 5 rounds of it, and a Super Prix at Brands at the end of the season. I don't know if the championship is here to stay, but i hope it is, hopefully with a few more rounds next season. The offical site is really good too with loads of info on the series and the drivers... http://www.seatcuprachampionship.co.uk/ Last edited by Ste; 9 May 2003 at 13:10. |

Sounds like a good championship, you can add Natalie Barratt to the list of name drivers. Isn't Gordon Sheddon the guy with one leg shorter than the other?

I haven't heard that one before. I thought it was just ego problems he had. Saw his column in Autosport yesterday. "I don't make mistakes twice". Ooook then.
My tip is Julian Westwood. |

I was talking to Robert Huff's dad at Croft and they seem pretty confident that he can win it. He put in a great drive in the first race to come up from the back, and nobody really got near him in the second race, although we lost a couple of contenders at the first corner.

Paula Cook was mixing it in the pack, until she retired. I think she'll definitely be flying the flag for the lasses. |

I'm planning on going to three of the rounds at Rockingham, Thruxton and Brands. All sounds like it's got off to a good start and will hopefully grow into something even bigger next season. My tip for the overall winner, Gordon Shedden.

I hope Andre D'Cruze does well too. He's been one of my pals for years now and it's about time he had some really good luck.

An excellent performance in both sessions by Stefan, especially in the wet, then drying first session, where he was in the top 7 for all the damp period whilst driving on slicks, then as a dry line appeared captuered pole by approx 4", and then continued to lower the pole time.
