Historic Stock Car Racing Series Australia (renamed)
I did a total-up back in 2000 that had 68 NASCARS in Australia. I know that my old Pontiac went to god (crashed in a TV commercial). I still have Walter Gilles' Lumina so thats one!
I was asked the other day where they all went. Any ideas? |

I heard some of them came back to the USA.
The HSR has a vintage nascar series going and the 1990's cars have been popular for this road course based series. |

Does Brewer/Fastrack still have the Commodore (rebodied Lumina)?
Rusty French had a couple as well (didn't he import a few early '00 built cars when the PowerTour was running, but the series fell over before they raced) |

I think thats Dick Howe's (ex Terry Wyhoon) I will do some chasing up to update the 1999 list. The Wanless Taurus went to Peacock in WA then back to the West Coast. I know one of the Tinworth Pontiac's was an ex Kyle Petty car that had a "Daytona Pole" and one of the early Charlie O'Brien Hagan Oldsmobiles was a Labonte car! My Walter Giles Lumina was the first "all Australian" Nascar in that it was built by Walter here, including the floor pan, with only the Lumina body panels being US sourced. Matt Lagoon has a few cars and Fastrack have several including an ex-Faulkner Olds that is now mostly Monte Carlo. Rusty French also bought two Monte Carlo's into Australia around 2000. When you think about it, NASCAR in Australia lasted 12 years, thats as long as Group C and with over 70 cars here, that is probably more than there were Group C cars If anyone knows a current owner of a NASCAR, let them know they are not forgotten. We should get a Register going. Last edited by Camaroz; 9 May 2009 at 07:47. |

My usual mount at Fastrack was an ex Tropic Coast (Thomas) Lumina. Fastrack also had one of the Gene Cook T'Birds. |

Mountainstar, do you know if there is anyone in the US that still has panels for the older NASCARS? Buick, Olds, Lumina, Pontiac...

I think the Fastrack ex Faulkner Cutlass (Oldsmacarlo) is the chassis that now sits under the VX Monaro.

The Thunderdome may be "dead" but these cars should not be forgotten.

Agree completely, its a pity its not remembered more fondly, it provided entertaining motorsport for 12 seasons & allowed many people a chance to get into the sport. (and arguably half-saved Brad Jones' career)

Things have been cruising along.
We need to contact the current owners of these cars. This will not be the rebirth of NASCAR in Australia but a legitimate getting together of "Historic Stock Cars in Australia". The emphasis will be on restoration. Wouldn't hurt to look here... www.hscrs.com CCC |

Also the availability of recent cars before the COT came about will help bolster the ranks. Apparently some rollers/chassis were available for around $12000. |
