Who would have won without the safety car?
Had a discussion/argument with a friend today over the safety car at bathurst. the basis of which was who would have won if there was no safety car. so since 1987 till 2006 does anyone think the wrong car won the race? of couse with no SC breakdowns become an issue e.g would Skaifes car have made it with the paper in the radiator, so given what we know was or was not wrong with cars at the end, what races were won by the SC coming out?

It depends how you want to look at it, as alot of the races finishing order are shaped by the amount of safety cars, not just one.
For instance, if there were no safety cars, Skaife's car in 2002 wouldn't have been at that part of the circuit at that point in time to scoop up the plastic bag. Of course the 1989 and 1991 races ran safety car free, so the right car won those races. In 1987 Ludwig/Neidzweidz lost a lap behind the safety car, they probably could have run down Soper/Dieudonne, even though Ludwig ran out of fuel at one stage and coasted down Conrod. They were disqualified of course, but it is interesting to note that the Seton/Bowe Nissan lost a lap at the exact same moment that Ludwig/Neidzweidz did as they pitted under safety car, and wound up within a lap of the Brock #10 car........ Without the safety car Perkins/Ingall had no chance in 1995. Over the last few years it's probably safe to say the fastest cars won the race, but they would have won far more convincingly without safety cars. It's hard to judge as they are so trigger happy with safety cars in the last few years, the races never develop a natural flow to see who is quick and who isn't, which is a major shame....... |

Also remember if there were no safety cars the whole fuel window thing would have mixed up the results with people needin a splash in dash

Skaife would have won by further without the safety car...it actually brought the field closer to him when he was clearly pulling away. People often discount this fact when considering safety cars - it is (more often then not) the leader who is disadvantaged. Cynically, it was why they began in the first place. The restarts have, ironically, caused more carnage than the lack of a safety car has ever caused.

Lowndes/Seton would've and should've won Bathurst in '04 when Radisich had suspension failure and parked his car at 'Skyline' which made the safety car to come out and allowed Murphy to pit.

Seton & Bowe would have won that race in 1987 but for the pace car coming out. And from memory I think George Fury & Terry Shiel would have finished second with Brock third but for that pace car

They'd have wound up laps behind without the safety car, not in victory lane. |
