Help needed please RE-saloon cars 1974
hi all.
I've spent the last two evenings happily and very nostalgically dredging through the forums on 10/10ths. Its a bit of a very long shot but my late father raced briefly in the british saloon car championship in 1974.the family car(a hillman hunter gls) was converted to race trim and entered first of all for a meeting at thruxton. After driving through the night with 3 of his kids in tow and if i remember correctly having to ask a local farmer to "borrow" some petrol(no such thing as 24 hour garages in those days!) followed by a kip in the layby outside thruxton on the A303 which i seem to recall was interupted by the local constabulary "checking if everything was ok",the car failed scrutineering!! so we turned around and headed home(which was Hartlepool).the next race was at snetterton in may 1974 which was a bit more successful.my dad came last i think after a battle with a moskvich! the race after that was at silverstone on the old club circuit.it hailstoned during practice and my dad sadly aquaplanned off the track at maggotts leaving the car out of action. In the true spirit of club racing,a certain Alex Clacher gave some of us a lift home and the remainder of the clan followed in a family friends Escort Mk1.I seem to recall my dad lending a certain J Palmer a distributor cap and watching Gerry Marshall blast around silverstone in Big Bertha. Please bear in mind this was a while ago so maybe some of this is slightly rose tinted(i was only 10 at the time).Anyway the point of my thread(or Novel!) is that i was wondering if anyone out there in 10/10ths land has any evidence of my fathers brief racing career (photos, programmes, results, practice sheets--anything!!) many thanks guys tim PS-MY FATHERS NAME IS ALLAN TWYFORD |

There was no Snetterton BTCC race in may 1974, and Allan Twyford is not in my database. Could your father have raced in the Production championship instead?

I suspect it was ProdSaloons Tim, rather than the 'National' Saloon car series, GRoup1 in '74. The Big Bertha reference indicates 74 also. I don't think any Moskviches raced in G1 in 74 or later, though they were numerous in Prodsaloons. I don't recall your dad racing, though I only got to Mallory in those days.
I don't think J Palmer started racing til '75 at the earliest, maybe even 76. |
