Manufacturers

As CART moves forward for the future what engine manufacturers would you like to see get involved with the series?
Do you think Daimler-Chrysler will be an engine manufacturer in CART? Since the Barber Dodge series is aligned with CART I think it would be great to see them move up into the top series with one of their engines. They’ve always done a great job in the past in any series they participate in and Dodge has some great relationships with potential sponsors that might want to join them in a global racing series.
Then there’s the F1 factor. If CART and F1 start working together for the future is there a chance that we’ll see manufacturers build rides for their young guys on the way up. For example Christiano’s deal with Toyota thus far. Could F1 teams start building their own champ cars simply to better prep their young talent? This would also be beneficially in building driver/manufacturer image. By the time a young driver makes it through CART to F1 his/her name will already be sinonimous with the manufacturer. If something like this were to happen it could potentially give us many new manufacturers with years of open wheel experience and a much broader global image. Ford and Dodge will keep the American faithful interested while the F1 faithful might just get more interested in the CART brand if Ferrari/BMW carried their feud over to champ cars.

I see the idea of F1 teams building Champ Cars quite unreal... I think F1 teams prefer to spend on testing first... although it'd be great to see McLaren racing in both F1 and CART like in the 70's

Porsche and Daimler-Chrysler have both been in before though, are they likely to come back?

Maserati were looking at it for their comeback to motorsports, but they seem to be angling for Sportscars at the moment.

I would like to see Porsche take another shot at Champ Cars. SAAB would be another choice. Volvo seems to be trying to update their image a little. What about Mitsubishi? They, I believe, are the number three auto manufacturer in Japan. They have considerable resources and it would raise their image.

Ford. Oh wait, they are all Ford-Cosworth engines anyway. Oh well

Um, MG would be nice, perhaps another American company - one of the General Motors companies.

There was some talk of branding those cosworths as Mazdas. It makes sense, Ford owns Mazda and Mazda is introducing the 6, RX-8 and Mazdaspeed Protege next year. (I think new protege for '04 model year) I've noticed some mazda advertising this year, where in the past there was none. For '05 CART can be an all rotary series!!

The currrent F1 manufacturers can all produce engines under brands other than their present ones. Ilmor(Daimler-Chrysler brands) Ford(Jaguar-Aston Martin-Mazda-Volvo) Toyota (Lexus)Renault(Nissan-Infiniti)Ferrari (Fiat, Maserati) Honda (Accura).There are heaps of options for the present manufacturers.

There's plenty of manufacturers out there at the moment... it's just a case of finding one that won't cause the political and internal bickering that Honda and Toyota produced.

And even Honda was well behaved before Toyota showed up.

BTW, DaimlerChrysler owns Mitsubishi, VW/Audi owns Skoda, and GM owns Saab... There are almost no independants anymore.

Yeah... That's why I've switched my brand loyalty to Honda... Last of the independants.

Even Subaru is partly owned by GM... They can't compete directly with each other on-track.

Yup... The only hope is that there's a critical mass these conglomerates can reach before they collapse and explode.

Or that there are some major antitrust rulings against the biggest outfits, GM and Toyota.

Neither is too likely. Eventually those two will merge, and drive every other company out of business.
