TV Rights
With the next Ashes series not going to Free to Air TV because the commercial stations cant afford the rights, when is the Cockroach going to go for the big bucks and sell out to pay TV?
And if he does, how many will fork out thier had earned to get Pay TV? |

Hrmmm, could pay tv out bid free to air?
It would be nice if pay tv could somehow supplement the free to air stuff a bit more... |

Partial credit bloggs. The biggest issue with the Ashes series (the ones being played in England Im assuming) is the timeslot that the matches start in.
From memory, they would start at like 8pm or something, right in the middle of their peak programming. Something that the networks didnt want to interfere with and hence, the tour will go to Fox or something. The Supercars have no such programming woes, but it will be interesting to see how the bidding goes for the next contract. I'm sure if it went up, the other categories who run on the AVESCO card wouldnt mind paying more than they already do to further supplement the AVESCO deals Last edited by mitchie; 10 Nov 2004 at 12:30. |

Exactly right Mitchie, as if they don't pay enough already, but that has already been discussed in another thread

Aren't the V8's on FOX as well as Channel 10? I don't have pay TV but i'm sure that the V8 Supercars have a highlights program the day after a round on FOX Sports.

They still do.
Maybe in the future the rights might be given to Fox Sports to cover the events, which the package being 'on-sold' to a free-to-air channel (eg..Channel 10) to show the races on the same day. The support categories would get a better run (same day coverage) if it was on Foxtel probably. |

I used to have pay tv, and yes they still have the V8's on the day after the round, but it is usually only 90mins worth. You end up missing a little of the pre and post racing stuff.
I don't think Fox has the Bathurst or Sandown Live either which is an issue. If Fox had all the rounds live, including Bath and Sand, and considering I record to DVD all the rounds, then pay tv would pay for itself.........for my situation. |

While it might be good for AVESCO's fortune if they did go to Pay-TV it would be disastrous for the series. If teams are struggling to get sponsorship with the audience they get on Ch10 how much harder will it be when they get a much smaller audience on PayTV?
F1 makes certain that they are available on Free-to-view TV just so that the teams can protect the sponsorship deals. |

Unless people not having Pay-TV was in the extreme minority, then races not being shown on free-to-air is not worth worrying about.
If say Foxtel got the rights to cover the races, i'm sure that they would be on-sold to a free-to-air network, pretty much the opposite of what happens now. That wouldn't be much different to now. |

You've got this back to front. C10 won't pay for it because they have no problem finding content to fill in a Sunday arvo.
The pay networks have two 24 hour a day channels to fill in so they are always on the prowl for anything they can get their hands on. |

The V8s remain on the Government's anti-siphoning list, meaning TV rights have to be offered to the free-to-air networks first.
Ten are making money on the current deal, and the sport can't afford to lose the free-to-air exposure. No multi-zeros TV deal can replace the value of network TV exposure. Case closed. |
