It's a Zakspeed in 1987 driven I think by Christian Danner, East was put in Place of West because in 1987 there was the race race in Hungary which was in Eastern Europe, which was thought to be a sign of goodwill from what was then Western Europe.

well, the image is called East-zack... this kind of helps heehee...
I remember that East/Hungary thing, so i agree with Oversteer. x C Anyone has photos of a car with football scores on it? I vaguely remember that during a world cup a team joked with it during qualifying or something, not sure if they made it to the race... |

This is indeed a Zakspeed, the 1986 version, driven by ... ermm ... Huub Rothengatter, Jos' manager nowadays?
"East" is iirc not caused by the East-Europe thing but by the first non-tobacco GP's. "East" normally was "West" on the cars, yes the same brand as on the McLarens these days. Similar to Jordan's "Bitten and Hisses" instead of "Benson and Hedges". So I guess this Hockenheim or so. The "Ireland 2 - Italy 0" decall on the tub was ofcourse with Eddie Jordan! World Cup 1994 on the Jordan at Magny-Cours iirc. |

It is in fact the 1986 Zakspeed, driven by Huub Rothengatter. Good call, Dino, I'm guessing the Dutch connection helped.
When McLaren announced their sponsorship deal with West in 1997, all I could remember was the sad run of the Zakspeeds in F1 in the mid-eighties, Zakseep had a glorious history of tuning and racing Fords and made the leap to F1 where they were just one of many teams struggling to qualify. The last survivor of these teams is Minardi. (Whither ATS, AGS, Rial, Dallara, Larrouse, BMS, Coloni, Osella, Life, and uroBrun?) The "East" variation was of course used in places that banned Tobacco Sponsorship, the UK, France and Germany. It was to my memory, the first "clever" attempt to get around the advertising ban. I wonder why McLaren hasn't resurrectedthe same idea? I am probably wrong, but this picture looks like Hockenheim to me. |

McLaren probably don't run with 'East' branding, lest their cars should slump to the level of a Zakspeed F1. And yet Zakspeed's other efforts have all been so good.

Well I could only think of Bernd Schneider as another Zakspeed-driver and he drove a few years later than this model so Huub was my only option.
I found another Zakspeed picture on my HD. It's strikingly beautiful imo but that's probably only from this angle. Well who is it, what car, what event and why is this pic important? |

That football thingy was back in 1994.
At Imola, Jordan put jokingly on their cars: Ireland 1 - Italy 0 A few races later (Canada I believe, but it could be Spain), Minardi took the upperhand and their cars read: Italy in - Ireland out  Back in 1993 McLaren accompanied their victories with a squashed hedgehog (a hint at the Sega-sponsorship at Williams that year) on the car. Williams had something with a little bombshell, if I remember correctly. |

Yeah that's probably Comas in the 1994 Larrousse-Ford. The corner looks like Eau Rouge doesn't it?

Does anyone have a picture of the hedgehog on the car? I've heard of that car, but never actually seen the quashed hedgehog.
Cheers. |
