Da Costa is the obvious candidate isn't he?

that would depend on what red bull know that we don't about sainz and kvyat i suppose. common sense says that a season in gp3 does not prepare a driver for f1, but this *is* f1 and red bull we're talking about!

Yes, that's why I said realistic. Don't know if it's too early for those two. Strange things happen in F1, so it's possible.

it would be decidedly weird of them to not promote da costa, but put sainz in ahead of him.
as for non-realistic pie in the sky suggestions, as per a comment on another thread somewhere i really want them to give the drive to frijns, on the understanding that it's till one of their juniors is good enough. there's no-one out there in the right place at the right time with more talent. |

I don't like to be driven by the hype created by the media, but now I wonder what can Da Costa be able to do.

Da Costa is the only candidate. Sainz and Kvyat are nowhere near ready.

I thought Nasr's name had cropped up in relation to the seat?

Yes he has. And he does have serious Brazilian back-ups which always help... Anybody else worth mentioning at this stage?
I read Frinjs but he has been outqualified by Lancaster this year... What about Valsecchi? Bird? Magnussen? |

I thought this site was about exchanging ideas but apparently not... Not sure where the self-promotion idea comes from but I prefer to stand for what I believe in and discuss drivers' ability and potential rather than getting personal. And if you ask me, yes I do believe Bird deserves more acknowledgement in this site than he has had in the past. That is not called self-promotion but a personal opinion. In the same way, others believe Frinjs has done enough to make the F1 grid and I personally dont. As simple as that.

Perhaps Red Bull could bring Mr Sainz Jr and Mr Da Costa into the squad... stranger things have happened with these guys... |

there's no announcement, but they have said a few times so far that his seat isn't in question. they're very keen to point out he's a bit behind ricciardo in terms of f1 experience but once he reaches the half season mark next year i suspect there will be a lot of pressure for him to perform in an epic way consistently. presumably if he did perform aforementioned miracles ricciardo would find himself being watched very closely too.

Many more direct comparisons will be able to be made in 2014 when the 4 Red Bull cars share Renault powerplants, common RBT gearboxes and common RBT/Renault KERS installations....

good point. if jev can cling onto that toro rosso drive he could well be in a very strong position going into next season. the italians do design some pretty cool cars, though they almost always seem to lack some speed which doesn't always get explained. especially this season.

yeah, i think this is different. it never made sense to keep both of the drivers at the time of alguersuari when there were 2 guys in ricciardo and vergne who were both absolutely ready, at the right point in their careers and just as capable.
they're obviously not in the same situation now. |

Can't help but feel bad about Frijns not being in the Sauber this year. He would have performed much better than Gootoerase IMO. Sad that the bank balance wasn't up to speed as much as his ability behind the wheel.
Sainz Jr is apparently a better steering wheel attendant than Da Costa. And has a better bank balance too apparently. Having a famous Father and his name, might help his butt fit the seat better. |

any preexisting cash situation is pretty academic with red bull.
and at this stage sainz' old man isn't really a factor. that will have undoubtably helped him get picked up by the scheme in the first place, but now? i don't think it's relevant outside of spain. i agree about feeling sorry for frijns though. it would have been an uphill battle, but like you i think he'd have produced some random great drives throughout the year. |
