Hoping the best for a Legend and fellow Historic Racer
I wasn't aware until bumping into one of Vince Woodman's long serving mechanics today that Vince suffered a severe stroke while attending the British GP 2 weeks ago. Luckily with the medical facilities present at the event he was given expert attention and is currently in Oxford John Radcliffe hospital.
I only got to know Vince in the last few years when racing against him in his glorious Broadspeed Capri that had been in his ownership for nigh on 40 years. He turned out to be as nice a guy as you could wish to meet. I spoke to him a few weeks ago when he called to tell me that he had sold the Capri to JD Classics and was keen to get an Escort to replace it. The question of whether I was interested in selling mine was raised, but as the answer was negative he found another closer to home and was in the throws of preparing it in VMW Motors livery to enter the JD Classics challenge at Oulton Park. He showed me some pictures at Brands more recently and was excited about the prospect of driving an Escort again. Sadly it sounds like this will now not be the case for a while, and I'm sure all followers of UK Club Motorsport will join me in wishing him well, and god willing a recovery to good health. I'll try and get more information on his current condition after the weekend, and post it here. Last edited by Mike Bell; 19 Jul 2012 at 20:15. |

There was a mention in Motorsport News on Wednesday. Don't know the man, but I'm sure all motorsport fans wish him well. Milady had a stroke on Xmas Day 2008, and fortunately has regained 98% of her faculties, so I do empathise.....

Like Vince, I also suffered a stroke at a race circuit, in my case, the Nurburgring. If you're going to have one, there's no better place in terms of the medical response and facilities!!!
I wish Vince the very best and hope for a full recovery for him. |

I remember watching Vince at Oulton Park in 1975 (my first year watching motorsport).I also took his photo getting out of his Capri in the paddock at last years test session at Mallory Park for the Special/Super saloons.
Best wishes for a speedy recovery. |

I've managed to get some up to date news on Vince and it is all positive! The latest is that he is now nearer to home at a specialist unit in Gloucester and making slow but steady progress towards recovery.
Great to hear and all best wishes to Vince and family. |

Obviously it's awful to hear anyone has had such terrible luck even if you don't know them. I hope Vince has a speedy recovery and pass on my best wishes to him and his family.

A further update having spoken to Vince's son James this afternoon.
And it is good news, with Vince continuing to make progress! Conversation improving, watching TV (although apparently like a lot of hospitals his is mounted in such a position he can hardly see it!) some movement returning and very alert. Great to hear and hopefully his recovery will continue at same rate! Bit too soon for Portimao but maybe next year! |

Keep getting better Vince.
I've been watching, sometimes Wide Eyed, you race for 40+ years. I'd like it to continue. |

Latest update from James Woodman is that Vince is continuing to get mobility back. He is now receiving more physio in order to hopefully get to the standing and walking phase of recovery soon.
Apparantly he has now been given a mobile phone and has started to call James and others about work, so obviously good progress there! Keep up the good work, Vince! |

Proof of Vince's continued progress and determination came this morning when James phoned me. Vince is leaving hospital this week to continue recovery at home!
