Ferrari LMP2 engine?

Ferrari will supply the A1 Grand Prix series with V8 engines for six years from the 2008/2009 season. Currently the A1GP cars are powered by a Zytek engine which is based on the LMP1/LMP2 engine.

What do you think? Will we see this engine in a LMP in the next few years? Or will this be a A1GP deal (for the €€€) only and do the Italians stay out of Le Mans?

Subaru_WRX_STi has a lot of promise if they can keep it on the circuit!
Ferrari has a very successful car now in GT racing, winning all the 3 majors series, so why coming to LMP competition, especially in P2 ?

Good observation, but doubt Ferrari would do it & (correct me if I am wrong) the cars are only leased to the teams, remaining property of A1 so no chance of a 3rd party getting hold of it either.

Actually I think Lucchini was going to use the engine, but it rebadged as Alfa Romeo...

Alfa Romeo engines used on various Lucchini were based on the V6 "stock-block" used since the late 70S on models such as Alfa6, GTV V6, and others

I am sure Ferrari owns the design of the engine and are free do develop it into an endurance engine.

They might as well with all the customer engine business they've been doing as of late (A1GP and F1)

I would think they are more likely to rebadge it as a Maserati and run it in endurance racing

Yes it is in a revival of sorts isn't it.

Fiat even ran it on their Sponsored Yamaha Moto GP team at Phillip Island. Livery and leathers for Rossi and Edwards. Fiat does seem to be inserting the Abarth branding in all of their raceteams since its re-launch earlier this year.

Why would they? They're starting to fall behind a little in F1, and the a1gp thing is distraction enough. Plus, they already race in GT racing.

Ferrari have only dropped back in F1 due to no German driver! Still a match for McLaren and easily better than the rest.

A Ferrari P2 project is a rumour that just won't go away

It won't if people decide that every new project has possible new links to an LMP2 project, will it? So it might happen. So might a Hyundai LMP2 for all we know.

true but I've not heard of/seen Hyundai staff sounding out LMP2 teams.

Having won half of the races this season can't really be called falling behind, can it? Besides, if you increase your staff, additional activities aren't a distraction but a chance to explore other things, not counting the business side.
