NASCAR threw a bone to the Ford teams Tuesday

NASCAR Allows Fords a Quarter-Inch
Ben Blake, Senior Editor, RACER
Daytona Beach, Fla., Jan. 22
NASCAR threw a bone to the Ford teams Tuesday, announcing that the height of
their spoilers would be reduced by a quarter-inch.
The Ford spoilers for the Daytona 500 will be 6.25in high and will remain
57in wide, same as on the Chevrolet. Spoilers for Dodges and Pontiacs will
remain at 6.5in.
Ford teams had hoped for more. The Fords, for whatever reasons, had been
significantly slower in solo runs than the Chevrolets and Dodges, and most
cited the spoiler. Reduction in spoiler height could result in less drag and
better overall balance.
The Ford teams obviously wanted more. "I'm disappointed," said Frank
Stoddard, crew chief for Ford's Jeff Burton. "We went down to Daytona, and
it was clear that everyone was off. NASCAR said that they would make
adjustments.
"The wind-tunnel data showed in order for the Fords to compete with the
Dodges, and the Pontiacs, we would need a 6in spoiler. How we can overcome
the deficit and still race competitively with the rule issued [Tuesday] is
going to be very difficult in my opinion.
"A GM product has won at least twelve of the last sixteen restrictor plate
races. I don’t see things changing in the near future."
Chevrolets won all four plate races last year. The last plate win for a Ford
was by Burton at Daytona in July 2000.
NASCAR has said modifications could yet be made up to the time of the
Daytona 500 Feb. 17. Expect to hear a good bit more from Ford before and
after pole qualifying Feb. 9

I hope that there is not one ford in the top twenty in the championship points at the end of the season.
