A New Innovation from OMP

Ok, we've seen it before on Single seaters, but I've never heard of one for rally or touring cars before. Thoughts from the rescue bods? |

Looks good and quite clever.
Two questions though - how do you get it over the door bars, and how long until similar designs trickle down the ladder and reach club events etc etc? |

The same way you'd get a KED over the door bars...or you could cut them away if necessary.

Thing is, if a driver warrents extracation on a spinal board, it's highly likely the rescue crew will have done some cutting before hand.
Apart from the price, I see no reason why this can't be fitted to a clubbies car. |

Price could be a factor, but think it's like any of these things - sometimes just think they take a while to "work themselves down" so to speak.

All very well. Try to get that thing out of a car with a full cage, door bars and a narrow opening.

See the recent fire extinguisher and race suit threads (racing ranters fourm)
Now this WOULD be a useful thing to have. I've got OMP seats - I'd like one! No price on that webpage though. John |

Found a price.
See: http://www.streetandcircuit-shop.biz...CAT&catid=1029 £781. Hmmmmmm. There's good ideas and god! ideas That's for the full seat. Surely that back board would fit into an existing seat model? For a lot less. John |

I believe it currently only fits the WRC model of seat. but that price puts it firmly in reach of only professional teams. Hopefully it can filter down quickly.

And it has been in the OMP range for over a year. Extra weight is 1.5 kg. |

This has been around for a while as it is included on the FIA extrication DVD.
It is appears to be an extrication device along similar lines to the various single seater extrication seats allowing rescuers to quickly and easily stabilise the spine. It would be no different extricating a driver using this than any other method. If more space is required then the tools are used to create space to ease the process. We quite often utilise the seat to stabilse the spine and then extricate driver and seat together, this would most likely be easier as it is less bulky and is designed to be easily released from the vehicle. As always it is necessary to prioritise the ABC. This is not the only country to have rescue units but we tend to combine all the facilities on one vehicle whereas other countries may have the same equipment on more than one vehicle. The KED unit is only one part of the extrication system they do need to be backed up with cutting equipment. The ked will be generally ok with single seaters especially if they are carbonfibre tubs but with saloons and sportscars with cages then there is always a need for cutting equipment to gain access/create space. |

Looks neat and overcomes many of my objections to the use of a KED (IMHO, the most overrated/used piece of extraction kit I have come across in many years of rescue work).
Still means that if you are serious about the chance of cervical spine damage (rather than just going through the motions) you usually have to take the roof/cage off. Just has the potential to get the driver better packaged more quickly. I would very much like the chance to play with a seat like this and take some pictures for training etc. so if anyone knows a friendly driver who has one fitted, a PM would be welcome. Regards Jim |

Suggestion...
Find a racer which has been damaged in some way which renders it pretty complete, yet irrepairable (hard job I know) Fit one of these seats to it Then do a practice extracation on it. what's really needed is a kind of re-usable training rig though. |

Up to a point. What is needed is a car with the seat or even the seat before fitting.
(Once we have a casualty secured to this seat shell or in a KED or just using skilled manual handling the rest is much the same. So it is the arrangements of the belts, seat fixings etc. on this seat which matters.) Regards. Jim |

It's all very well, but they'd have to turn up with some on training days theres no point in them if the first time you come across them is at an incident!

As said before there are some details on its use on the FIA extrication DVD. I am sure its not rocket science to work out which bits go where that even a lowly rescue bod could work it out BARC HQ are quite lucky that there are some ex BTCC shells to use for extrication training, thats as long as no other bits have wandered off during the winter |
