The Hungarian government you mean? Zsolt's dad is the Renault concessionaire for Hungary, so should have some access to $$

Cheaper than supplying 1/2 price engines I suppose.
Those craapy old Supertec things must be laying around somewhere, maybe they coul dgive them to Minardi FOC as a swap? |

Baumgartner hasn't paid.....
According to the news here in Denmark, Baumagartner is in trouble because one of his sponsors claims that their deal was for the Jordan-ride - not the Minardi-ride. That could mean that he won't get the money from the Hungarian government.

According to this (danish) site http://www.pole-position.dk/nyhed.php?N_nr=2482 Baumgartner is out.
A quick sum up of the main parts: Baumgartners sponsors: CIB Bank $1'000'000 Uniqa (insurance) $1'000'000 Mol RT (oil) $2'000'000 Hungary $4'000'000 Mol RT's sponsorship was based on Baumgartner driving for Jordan, so now they want the following clauses: Baumgartner must finish all races in 2004 and get at leased 16 points. As that is imposible, Baumgartners farther and his manager Tamas Frank can't come up with the money for Minardi (especialy 'cos the other sponsors will only pay if Mol RT's share get's paied). |

16 points? That's a very stringent target, to say the least.

It may simply be a way of getting out of a deal which was heavily tipped in favour of Minardi and would do nothing for Baumgartners career. Most drivers of his ability and with that much money would be better off pursuing a career in the ALMS or in touring cars for a lot less dosh and the sponsors would probably get much more for their money.

I'm sure Baumgartner would do anything to get to drive in F1, even for Minardi. And Minardi was quite happy about the $8'000'000. But mayby it's the Hungarian government (who apparently owns part of Mol RT) that got cold feet?
Oh, and, btw. I can understand why a company won't pay the same for a Jordan and a Minardi seat :o) Last edited by nkh; 15 Jan 2004 at 20:28. |

Apparently Bruni also had trouble coming up with his first payment, so I wonder if we'll see him for full season. So maybe we'll see Jos back in his old car (if he can't charm Eddie) and Kiesa replacing Bruni during the year?!

It actually better for a company to support Minardi than it is to support Jordan. Being renowned as the last team on the grid they get more coverage than most midfield teams and Minardi do a good job at getting themselves in the press a lot.

Did Baumgartner even score 16 points during his entire F3000 career?

Actually guys you are right. Baumgartner seems to be out of question now. When the government anounced that they will sponsor Zsolt with $4 million the general population was not too happy. So I think that the government is backing out via MOL. MOL is hudge company they spend more on office supplies, so it must not be a money question I am sure.
I have not talked to Zsolt yet (his cell is turned off since this story started 3 days ago). So we will see. |
