V8SC V's AFL
I know it's been discussed before. However Ian Johnston, head of CH7 Sport was on 3AW last night discussing the programming schedule for AFL in 2007.
Initially when Ch's 10 & 7 got the footy rights they expected Foxtel to also come in on the agreement and broadcast games as well, to free up air time. Well Foxtel wont pay the asking fee and have officially backed out. Today Ch's 10 & 7 have to finalise the scheduling, and both will now have to show 4 games each weekend. Ch7 will show fri night, sat arvo and night and sun arvo. When a listener called in and asked how this affects the V8's for next year, he said the V8's will be worked around the footy and left it at that. When pressed on the point for more clarity he said, when we negotiated the rites to the V8's we made it very clear to Tony that the footy comes first. The fact that foxtel has now officially backed out means that the V8's will probably be shown Sun morning or Sun night.(my guess) I wonder if Aussie Bernie is nervous right now |

probably not i would think.
notice only one game on sunday. it was expected that it would be two games. notice also that it was planned to go live with races, which means sunday mornings anyway, also the majority of rounds do not clash at all with the footy (8 out of 14). if anything this will hurt the live on saturday for those 6 races, but that will be it. |

Ch10 did an excellent job of telecasting the V8SC, even with the televised gaffs we all noted. Ch7 are yet to convince me (after many years) that they will give the V8SC coverage we have come to expect. We have probably lived through the golden years... expect to set your VCRs to the midnight hrs to catch 1/2 hrs coverage, well after reruns of Elvis movies, methinks. |

isnt this a win for TC. it was expected all along that Ch 7 would ahve two games on sunday, now its only going to be one, so that means more v8s on a sunday for us., less on saturday than we we were hoping (for those 6 rounds) but hey we dont have saturday now or we are watching at midnight.
i think the golden times are about to start |

Ch7 have to do two games on Sundays now not one.
Make no mistake about it, v8s are very secondary in all of this. 7 do a great job with sport but while the monewas good, this deal is not great for v8s. We will be treated like a second rate citizen compared to the AFL and always will be. Think about the bigger picture for promoters, advertisers and sponsors - this deal is not the brilliant one that Cochrane said it is. |

Da Moo ..... did you read the first post?????
"Ch7 will show fri night, sat arvo and night and sun arvo." Looks to me that there is 1 friday, 2 Saturday and only 1 on sunday!!! You need to also look at the bigger picture and rtealise that there is still likely to be more live coverage than w ever got from Ch 10. |

Is this just a Victorian thing or will they be screwing the V8s in NSW too so they can broadcast the VFL to traveling Mexicans?

I did read it mrjucy and the reason I posted is because its wrong. ch7 have to do 2 games on sundays not 1.
There may be more live coverage but the season will be so spread out and broadcast times all over the place that it is not doing the sport any favours. If you think its a good deal, that is your right but i think it was very short sighted. |

no they dont Da moo
just 1 one AFL has 4 games on sat and ten can not cover three within the required time frame, so 7 have to do two of them leaving ch 7 just one game on sunday this means better coverage than what we were expecting when the announcment was originally made |

Ch7 1 game Sun (2-5) means V8s finished by 1.30 for the 6 races affected. But as MN points out this week the big new downside is now Ch 7 have to do Footy Sat afternoon - so what happens to Saturday V8s Qual + Race 1 live??? Sounds like Aus Bernie has ****ed up and his teams arent going to be very happy about it. Wonder if hell have a pronouncement at PI this weekend.

V8's contract with 7 stipulates all races must be shown live (or near live). It's the near live bit that has me concerned.

Peckstar sorry but you are wrong.
There are 8 AFL games each week: 1 on Friday night - either 7 or offloaded to another broadcaster 4 on Saturday: 2 afternoon, 2 night - 7 have to do one afternoon and one night and 10 the same 3 Sunday - 7 will do 2 and 10 will do one unless 7 sell one off but at this stage, they have to do 2 games on Sunday. |

so then by your maths
Ch7 have 5 games and Ch ten have 3 games, is that what you are saying? contrary to what ch 7 are saying? unless you know something that we are not being told, then i think you will find that you are not correct |

Still not good news for WA where everything happens 2 hrs earlier. The AFL games will be shown live but the V8s may be held back until late evening.

Australia used to ride on the sheeps back, now it rides on WA's coat tails. On a motor sport note try Ross Dunkerton, that Green bloke whose team won Indy, the bloke 2nd fastest today at PI, a WA guy won a hysterics title in Europe in 2006 (was it Ross or Glen Zampatti) but I missed it in the Eastern Australian NATIONAL press. Our founding fathers foresaw wise men from the East & gave us the Senate to ensure their testosterone was neutered - thats you, what was your name ... |

Wonder why? Might be the same reason Saloon Cars didnt have a national round at Wanneroo, what do you think? Garth got a ride on ability alone .... any comment? The Caratti boys are quick but like the Zampattis in years gone by, will they continue? The cost alone wont stop them, but the responsibility of a family business might just as it did the Zampattis - interesting that Ross punted an Alfa in Europe rather than any series based on the East Coast. Do you think V8s attracts the best drivers - I dont. |
