Change to the 2013 calendar...
So, the FIA have announced that the German race, originally set for July 14th is to be moved forward by a week to July 7th and earmarking July 21st for a possible extra European race. Possibly Turkey? here

Are these guys stupid or just plain evil? Let's see the July 5-7 races:
o- DTM and FIA F3 at Norisring o- GT Tour at Val de Vienne o- MotoGP at Sachsenring o- V8 Supercars at Townsville o- IndyCar at Pocono o- ALMS at Lime Rock |

Turkey is the venue most sites are mentioning, but I can't see it happen. A Turkey - Hungary back to back would be a logistical nightmare, and I think Turkey would want guarantees for more than just one race which Bernie won't give.
I'd say a race at the Red Bull Ring is much more likely |

V8s are overnight European time Indycar would be evening Sunday European time. So these thanks to time zones don't really clash. DTM would be the biggest Issue, but then haven't MotoGP already moved their event back a week to the 7th in order to avoid clashing on the 14th? |

And now Austin is looking for a date change because of a football (American) game:

That's true: race broadcasts don't clash. But media coverage does: if you have 3, 6 or 15 minutes of motorsport news, F1 occupies them each race.

It seems the chances of an Austrian GP at the Red Bull Ring are increasing.

Having got that off my chest, even an emasculated Osterreichring is preferable to most of the "Far East" dross. |

track layout is exactly the same as it was in 2003. they just added a new pit/paddock-area. I loved the A1-ring, good racing there, and I'll be happy to see it back in F1. even if it's only brought back to spice Bernie's wallet |

He wasn't commenting on the Red Bull Ring versus the A1-Ring, but on the Red Bull/A1-Ring versus the Osterreichring.
Just picture for a moment, the 1985-87 turbo F1 cars rollicking out of the Glatz Kurve, over the crest at the top of the circuit, and down into the Bosch Kurve. In the draft, they could probably touch 230-mph on the run across the top there, before heading into the ~160-mph Bosch Kurve. Take a look at this onboard lap from 1987 and enjoy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KxUXpnGI648 And an onboard from 1973, before the Hella Licht chicane was added: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KCyuRwH5JMM Even the much more tame A1/Red Bull Ring though, is still quite preferable to pretty much all of the newer circuits on the F1 calendar. |

Thanks, "Purist", you hit the nail pretty firmly on the head, and explained it better than myself. I can't be bothered to look up a clip, but can you imagine a battle between Porsche 917s and Ferrari 512s at the old circuit?
It was simply carved out of the hillside, so plenty of rises and falls, and VERY fast sweeping curves. Racing heaven to me, but dangerous, and thereby hangs the tale - when is a life worth less than entertainment? (All that, though, AND you got Julie Andrews running down the hillside singing her heart out.) |

If it's just a stop gap race, then hold it there, no worries, in fact any European circuit that has a Grade 1 licence will do!!
I'd rather see a one-off race at either Motorland or Navarra though, 2 high quality newc circuits with good overtaking potential. |

My laptop has gone haywire. The "copy and paste" facility has not worked, and a post of mine to that effect finished up in "Getting to know you". Spooky.
Go to Google Images and type in A1 Ring and you'll see an overlay of the old Osterreichring and the A1 Ring. Then you'll see my point of view. |
