Hemelgarn pulls Indy entry
Lack of sponsor stymies stalwart IRL team

Lazier was second in the 2000 500 for Hemelgarn and won the IRL

Hemelgarn Racing has canned plans to run a car in this year's Indy 500, because it cannot find a sponsor for the event.

Ron Hemelgarn's team won the 1996 Indy 500 and the 2000 IRL Championship with Buddy Lazier and is one of the series' longest serving teams, but is now concentrating on running a car in the Infiniti Pro Series for Paul Dana and exploring options for a Champ Car programme later in the season.

"If you can't do Indy, it's really difficult to fill in just for the other IRL races," Hemelgarn Racing manager Lee Kunzman told Indystar.com. "We're in the racing business, so if I want to keep my crew, I've got to find a place for them to race. What I'm looking for is survival."

Hemelgarn's withdrawal, added to that of PDM Racing, makes it less likely that a full 33-car field will line up for the 500 on May 30.

Well with all of the big money now flowing into the IRL, you are seeing all of the original, underfunded teams being forced out. Frankly I am not surprised.

But it looks like Himelgarn will join forces with Walker Racing to form a team, so I say welcome and good luck! May you have much success in the CCWS!

And remember what Tony said, 33 IS just a number.

And I echo that, Welcome Mr. Hemelgarn!

Is it now actually cheaper to run in Champ Car than to run in the IRL?

Apparently SO! Now, let's see MORE deserters. From the IRL BACK to Champ Cars. Except Michael. HE can stay right where he is.

It was actually "34 minus 2"

Paul Diatlovitch (PDM Racing) had an entry filed, but finally had to close up his shops for good last Friday...

The team's assets are up for sale....

Thought you had no interest in the IRL, Mags?

You seem to be keeping an eye on it...

I'm good friends with his PR guy. He told me about this last night.

Well...this is a stretch??

Ok,...so he MAY be a Champcar owner in the near future..but at the moment all we're hearing is someone has withdrawn from Indy and the IRL

Well...*sarcastic* Hooray...glad you told me...

When I see a thread titled "Hemelgarn enters X Champcar race" THEN I'll be happy!

Mags...
This thread does not belong in this forum.
Should I move it, or close it?
I think maybe the latter, as the IRL forum already has a similar thread.
