crystal palace
Looking for some help.. I've got a tape of a saloon race at crystal palace that I'm trying to date, it was recorded from "100 Great sporting moments" many years ago.. Its in black and white with a front row of; Mike Crabtree in a Ford Escort RS1600, Gerry marshall in a Viva HB 2.5 litre GT which he raced in preferance to the new Firenza, after a bad practice run and a completing the front row a Camaro of Martin Thomas.
Any help with a date much appreciated Mark |

Sensational race wasn't it? Inches apart for lap after lap & Murray Walker at his best.
I wonder how many others the Beeb still has from Crystal Place. I assume they recorded the F2 races from 70 & 71. Date? not 100% sure, but by the time I look it up someone will have replied with luck. |

Classic race, and still gives me a buzz every time I see it. It was held on September 11 1971 and was known as the Iberia Trophy, part of the Osram Saloon Car Championship.
Sorry Andrew! |

I'd love to see again some of the old end of season TV Thruxton clubbies that the beeb covered. I once asked them if it is possible to buy old broadcast material but was told that much of their OB sports coverage - non mainstream stuff (like club racing) was destroyed or was filmed on tape that could be recorded over, which was often the case unfortunately.

I remember that Iberia Trophy meeting well - the third race meeting I ever attended as the Palace was a short bus ride from my school on a Saturday afternoon. That was the day Jody Scheckter, Dave Walker and Colin Vandervell had an epic battle in the F3 final, leaving Roger Williamson to pick his way through the last lap wreckage for the win.
I also have a very hazy memory of one of those televised Thruxton meetings - must have been November 1970 - involving Roger Williamson again, in his 1-litre Anglia, starting from the back of a packed grid in pouring rain and coming through to take the win. I'd have paid a lot to see that one again. |

Thanks all for your help and comments.. you are right, it was an exciting classic race with Murray Walker on fine form too!.
If we could go back 30 years and see it and smell it with the atmosphere in the stands would be great!. Does anyone on here have simular material of the era, and does anyone know of a retailer repruducing simular events?.. Mark-1300e |

A bit of a sad post-script, but there looks like there'll be no more racing of any sort at Crystal Palace.
Up to a year or two ago there were still hillclimbs using part of the old circuit (I went to one organised by Sevenoaks&District Motor Club). Bromley council have recently relaid all the tarmac, but decided to use a very light (almost cream apparently) coloured mixture. Hence any motor sport would leave a lot of obvious tyre marks. Despite assurances made by interested parties to clean it after use, the council is refusing to allow any such activities. A sad end for one of the few motorsport venues in SE England |

Weird. The street here outside my window was last week resurfaced with a strange cream coloured tarmac.Just waiting to see how long it will last...
Suggest the burning of a efegy of the leader of Bromley council in the park would be fun. |

Minorist - I would not be so sure.... It does not take a genius to work out that I'm mixed up to the neck in this stuff.

Not be so sure about what? are you trying to get racing back at the 'Palace? If you were, I'd be there for one (I live in Beckenham) and by the end of the year should have my 1935 riley 12/4 special on the go, so I'd even be able to enter...
My sister's currently working for Bromley council, so she'll be able to tell us who to make the efegy of |

ss_collins, you sound as if you're trying to do something about this daft situation. If that's the case, then I could probably find time to do my bit and help out. Or have I got the wrong end of the stick (that means I've got the carrot, right?)

Saw this great race on the same programme, televised years ago if my memory serves me correctly. Certainly a blast from the past with names such as Crabtree and Martin Thomas. Was Dave Matthews and Gerry Birrell mentioned? Had the tape but either given away or 'junked' with moving!
Of course it was Master James at Crystal Palace who collided with Dave Morgan. James jumped out of his car and ran over to a shocked Morgan and started punching his face, carefully after lifting his visor first Wellington School must have had their hands full Those were the days. PRF |

With regards to the Hunt/Morgan incident, Morgan's Licence was suspended for a year for causing the collision but Hunt was not punished for throwing the punch. The feeling at the time was that Morgan had been very harshly treated and was being made an example of. Hunt had gone to the Tribunal with lots of witnesses but Morgan had, perhaps, been rather less well prepared and offered little defence. I seem to recall that Morgan raced again in 1972 so I presume that the punishment was reduced on Appeal. Can anyone confirm this ?

It was indeed Morgan that caused the incident in the first place. He was suspended for a year for 'dangerous driving' but he was granted his licence back and he contested Formula Atlantic in 1971.
Contested but one Grand Prix, the British in 1975 in a Surtees TS16. This was the year of the freak rainstorms and he spun off. PRF |

ss-collins, I'd be happy to help out if it's for this fairly good cause. If you'd like to email me perhaps you could give me an outline of the situation?

minorist and ss-collins, as a local (forest hill), I would also be interested in how this could be progressed.

s'ven, a brief note of update; it is possible that crystal palace park has now been handed over to the GLA who might be more interested in having motor sport at this venue again. I think that the Sevenoaks&DMC might be organising something?
Try checking their website at http://www.sevenoaksmotorclub.com/ I'd imagine that there is a large number of people who live in the greater london area who (with sufficient advertising) would come to support events held here. It's definitely worth fighting for. Oh dear, I can feel myself being volunteered for something here!!! |
