FF1600 engine builders

In general, which is the best engine builder for FF1600 engines? Or do the better known ones such as Bold, Auriga, Scholar, Minister all produce pretty much the same product?

I was chatting to someone recently who knows FF1600 inside out and had changed from Bold to Scholar - must be a reason for it!

I put a scholar in at the begining of the season but for the next race in went the Bold as it had a bit more grunt.

so ideally then, one does what 'blue nose' does. and that is have a spare engine from another engine builder ) Actually, if you can afford it, having a spare engine makes good sense. It's a question of whether the spare is from a different builder I suppose. I have been reading the forums to pick up some knowledge on FF1600 and it seems to me that the Kent engine needs rebuilding quite often.. true?

Depends who is building the Scholars!
If it is Trevor van Rooyen you will get a flyer.

He built his own to win 34 races in 1977. Kenny Acheson then used his 2 motors to gain 3 titles in '78, but blew one up which became 'patch'.

a kent engine will do a season, then a rebuild at the end. if you have lots of ££££ then spare engine(s)! is good.

Bold is good, lots of racers use him with few problems, good priced and located in Salford. Auriga are more £££ build quiality engines, not as popular but maybe as there in kent? dont know much about scholar but have been recommended lots of times. some people are fussy with engines, and some builders have a rep for torquier engines some more top end engines etc. I use bold and he does a good engine, although some will come on and argue 'mine was ****' etc. but most of its down to the engine. if your after blocks etc i think mattray (enginetech) has some.

dont think minister are doing kents anymore????

what about all those guys who do their own engines?? Surely not ALL of them are, erm, legal are they? How well policed are engines in FF1600 generally?

None of Trevor's has ever failed a test and Van Diemen and Scholar (who ironically he builds them for now!) protested them regularly in '77 and '78. 6 times alone in '77. They were badged as Ministers then. Trevor just used their facilities in return as he did with his Auriga's for Dolan, De Ferran, Rees, Morelli etc. in late 80s/early 90s.

Trevor went to Scholar because Ralph had been trying to get his skills on his side for so long and eventually got his man to build Zetecs. The works VD team changed to Comtec, Comtec left FF but TvR stayed with Scholar.

I understand a number of engine builders who used to build motors in the 70/80s Minster etc etc, are looking at building Kents again because of the growing number of people running these cars up and down the country. Some very nice business out there i imagine. Ours is a Bold and i have been told by fellow competitors that it has plenty of the proverbial GRUNT. In my previous life 22 years ago i had a minster but it is to long ago to make a comparison.

whereabouts are Bold? What's their web-site? I was speaking to PAMotorsport recently about buying a car and discovered they are Auriga also. They are fairly convenient to me but I don't know if Bold is. I live near Cambridge.

Is Martin Spence still the guy behind Auriga?
They were in Dartford, when did they move to Ashford?
Scholar are on the A140 road at Stonham north of Ipswich.

Mmmmm.....

If you really want to fly, get a Zagk or a Gatmo, just don't pull in to the scrute bay after your race though....

Your right I used a Zagk at Spa the first time I went it must have been a 1700 as it was a monster.

Yep, they were "quick" alright.
Was it Gerrit van Kouwen who had a decent Gatmo, or am i wrong as usual?
