Top Engineering Schools in UK?
I am an American looking to go to school in the UK and study mechanical engineering. What are the top mechanical engineering schools in the UK? And do any of them have a motor sports degree?

engineering and technical expertise course in relation to motorsport at Cranfield University. Former students now work in the world of F3 in teams such as Performance, ADR and Avanti. |

The Cranfield degree is post grad. The top Automotive Engineering School is Leeds Uni. The top Motorsport Engineering School is Coventry.
Otheres such as Loughborough, Bath, Imperial College, Brookes are all very good mechanical, automotive and aeronautics uni's |

we do a broad range of topics and it doesn't cost the earth to live in wales. with ongoing projects such as Formula Student, Locost and various others theres always plenty of hands on work to do. Students run our workshop NOT Staff as is the case in some. Also theres a Circuit bout half hours drive that is activly used by all sorts of teams for testing... |

For motorsport engineering I've heard Leeds University and Oxford Brookes are pretty good! They're quick in the University karting championship too because they attract quite a lot of people with karting backgrounds.

Brookes only does an HND in Motorsport Engineering and Leeds doesnt do it at all but as I said they are both good engineering uni's. Leeds uni's Automotive Engineering would have been my second choice after Coventry's Motorsport Engineering because all the other Motorsport Engineering degree's look like a waste of time.

UCLAN is not an engineering school and it is no where near any race track.
Swansea is not a reknowned engineering school however as they did invent the Motorsport degree they do deserve a bit more credit. Brookes is an HND whcih means one extra year to your HE plans. Coventry however is a 5star engineering establishment based on the edge of motorsport valley and has great links with Prodrive, Jaguar and Aston Martin. It has been in the same league of engineering uni's as Brookes, Leeds, Imperial, Bath and Loughborough for years. |

Sihe do also visit tracks, pembrey in the Formula Vauxhall Junior of which there are three.
The Formula Student and locost test at llandow, with the later being run at all the 750mc race weekends. the project mini will run on selected events in south wales. Last edited by racingdick; 4 Mar 2003 at 20:33. |

Swansea have close links with Prodrive, Triple 8, Mclaren, ron champion based in spain.
Students in all courses have the opportunity to go go work experience with the above |

What about the master course of racing engineering that Leeds is offering?, I get more interested in it than in the master that Cranfield offer. Do you nkow more about those two courses?

Ive never heard of a masters at Leeds Uni, its not on their website or prospectus.

Mackmot mate, your a bit wrong about Brookes - I went there and did the course so I know, sure the degree isn't called motorsport engineering, its Beng automotive engineerng but has a heavy motorsports bias a is at least equal to Leeds in quality. Guest lectures whilst I was there included Willem Toet, Ade Reynard and a few others who I didn't go to but I have a feeling Dave Richards was there doing a talk at one point. Also the uni has very very good student motor club.

Charlex the Leeds master is called Automotive Engineering not Motorsport.
SS Colins there is an HND in Motorsport Engineering at Brookes and as you said yourself the degree is Automotive Engineering. |

A lad I know did the Automotive Engineering at Oxford Brooks. He was supported by TWR and worked there during his placement year and for about a year after he graduated. He is now working for BAR.

That's likely because BAR was hiring when they started... they hired three guys from my Uni, and live all the way over in Canadar. I think it's because we have the largest Aerospace program in the country and North America for that matter.
Don't go into engineering unless you REALLY like it, and by it I mean calculus, a ton of physics and some computer and electronics. Otherwise, you'll either flunk out, or graduate with grey hair. |

im on placement, but am studying at hertfordshire uni on automotive engineering. good course although it is automotive rather than motorsport so it does tend towards roadcars somewhat. the reason i chose it though is cos its heavily involved in formula student. we did it last year as a class 1-200 entry and won the class and numerous other awards, and we were highest placed british entry, 4th, in 2000. speaking to a guy at work, who is also on the judging panel, this is now seen as a vital requirement in any aspring motorsport engineers cv, i know several companies specifically look for this, know the people i work for did, and a mate who turned down lola, said that was all they asked in the interview he had

Yeah really make sure you like heavy maths, i did my head in and I had to leave, but that not the end of my time in the sport actually the beginning, being at Brookes and surrounded by so many motorsports nuts made me stick with it and I've just accepted a job at Motorsport news.
