A lot of people here have been saying that there should be BTCC road going versions of the competing cars. It seems that Vauxhall/ Opel are already doing this with the DTM.

I've just been sent an e-mail from Vauxhall telling me about their/Opels plans to build a two seater Astra Coupe that can do 187mph with a 4-litre V8 engine with gull-wing doors that is based on the DTM Astra Coupe. It'll be unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show and called the Astra Coupe OPC X-treme. The 20-inch rear wheels will power the car through a six-speed sequential gearbox and will share engineering with the DTM Astra Coupe.

I know its not a BTC car but it'd be close enough for me.

Offhand, I can't imagine Opel ever producing a 4L V8 Astra. And to have a sequential gearbox? That alone must easily costs 5K pounds mass produced??? It would cost so much. Would the public ever accept the car? I know die hard fans would.

Too late...

FYI more pics in this week's Auto Express.

What are the chances of this ever gaining type approval for road use? Probably very slim, and slimmer still if they want to keep the gullwing doors.

Put a few stickers on it and it'd be a DTM Car. The McLaren F1 has gullwing doors. Make a really good track day car.

Now that looks awesome. 187mph? Crikey. Strikes me as a bit similar to the Lotus Carlton, taking a standard Vauxhall and shoving a massive engine into it. And that was one hell of car. Although standard Astras don't come with gullwing doors of course...

The gullwings will probably mean re-doing all the European safety and crash tests which is not cheap, especially for a very limited production run. At £1M a time for the F1 compared to say £50K for the Astra, McLaren could afford to certification costs.

"The hot Astra is the fastest road legal car that Vauxhall has ever built" - Auto Express.
Did they say Road Legal?! It also has a rollcage so it will be safer.
BTW did anybody ever see the October 99 issue of Max Power as there was a BTCC Laguna replica and the inside of that Astra looks like it - low steering wheel that is halfway up the car etc.
