It looks like the car has gone in backwards and is past the flag point, so shouldn't the marshal be standing his ground and waving a yellow flag.

Maybe he is a bit slow and had not transfered from green to waved yellow as the incident entered his sector.

This is clearly the answer to the marshal shortage - Ejector flags.
When car loses control, a yellow flag is ejected from the rear of the car and when it finally stops (as in the picture) a green is ejected from the front.

As long as it doesn't eject from the rear of the flag marshal as he dives for cover!!!

I seem to remember the flag came from the top of the mound at the post where it was laid, i was further down on the bank at tower and the car continued on to hit the tyre wall ! and very hard minus the right rear wheel which was airborne and coming towards us
The metel barrier by the flag point was bent inwards and the post was very shaken.
So was the driver !!!!!!

Just up from the handle of the flag? Does have a look of pie about it. Of course, if this is an invisible marshal, that means flag in right hand, pie in left. Now we know what caused the shunt!

I've now studied this picture in more detail and can I say it is brilliant - and well done you for thinking up the "invisible" theme.

Re other posts on this thread: I can only say that on the numerous occasions that I have had cars throw themselves at me, showing a flag of any colour has been pretty low down the priority list. They can wait until I recover!

Well done David McCallum (and that will divide the youngsters from the oldies) for showing such bravery in standing in place and displaying a flag of any colour - be it right or wrong!
(PS: What badge number/grade does David McC have? Should we make him an honorary member - not as stupid as it sounds, we might get some publicity out of that one photo!)

If David McCallum was "The Invisible (man) Marshal",a couple of his other films, might also fit the bill, namely, "Hell Drivers" and "The Great Escape"

The marshal's lot is not a happy one! But at least the sun is shining at Combe, not like this poor soul at Silverstone in 1969! He could be the inspiration for Barry Foley's flagger in his 'Catchpole' cartoon series, 'Matt Dillon'.
