Releasing cars from pits into the path of other cars...

There used to be a time when it was a cardinal sin to release a car from a pit box into the path of another car already underway down pit lane.

What has happened to this rule as it seems now that teams release cars when they feel like it and rely upon the car already underway to take evasive action to avoid a collision. The cars then trundle down pitlane side by side.

Is this right and "safe"?

Don't really see a problem with it. They know what they are doing.

If it was done in the old Monaco pit or something, it'd be a bit daft.

Yeah, but the point is that it used to be a punishable offense, you could not release a car into the path of another, yet now is "seemingly ok" to do, was there a rule change?

I'm not really sure on it. It is an interesting one.

I think the problem has been releasing cars directly into the path of another car. Like with Barrichello and DC at Imola 2000. Now they are released to run side by side.

One to research after the race I think!

Well here in Australia, if you release your car into the path of another and the driver already in the fast lane has to take diversive action, you'll recieve a drive through. Simple as that. It's too dangerous, I remember seeing two V8 driver racing each other at 40 km/h in the pit lane, side by side...

The Kubica / Alonso one could have been dangerous, but both drivers were alert to the situation. I'm not sure if there is an official rule change on this - if not, Robert could feasibly get a time penalty added on for the team's infringement. If Massa had finished one place behind him, he definitely would have.

If there were two lane pitlanes like in most Champ Car venues, there'd be no problems...
