Question about Phillip Island 2000 WSB race?
I read that Anthony Gobert won in the wet in Race 1 by half a minute on the Bimota. I also read that he was the only one to go for full wet tyres whereas everyone else went for intermediates. But how wet was the race exactly? Was it as wet as it was in 2001? If it was, then going for intermediates was pretty stupid

Elphino, it was shown on free-to-air; same day coverage back when 10 cared about WSB...
From memory, it had stopped raining and the sun was out, but the track was still pretty wet in places; nowhere near as bad as it was in 2001. By mid-race, a dry line was starting to appear, but Gobert was long gone by that stage. |

That was probably one of Gobert's best ever rides. He just disappeared on his full-wet tyres while all the others were banking on a drying track. He led by a full minute at one stage I think...
Sadly, that was the only time the Bimota ever looked competitive. |

If it wasn't for the rain coming down with a couple of laps to go, there was definatly a chance that Fogarty could have got him in the closing stages.
Most of the leading riders went for intermediates because it wasn't actually raining when the race started, and with the strong winds present at Phillip Island, it was quite liekly it wouldn't take long for the track to dry. As it was there was a pretty dry line by lap 10. Gobert just went for broke, probably for the early race TV time as well, i really don't think they expected to win. That was a great race. Lucio Pedercini was running 2nd for a while, and Vittoriano Guereschi had a great ride on the Yamaha to 3rd place. |
