2017 Blancpain GT Asian Cup

So one of the unexpected announcements from the SRO conference is yet another GT series for Asia.

Maybe an attempt to muscle out the GT Asia series that is starting to struggle for numbers???

Will be a Pro Am and Am Am based series, as well as what DSC says will be 'controlled' Silver Cup. Assuming they don't want any major young protégés coming in and destroying the competition.

Nothing on car classes or race distances other than the final round is a two hour. Assume they would follow the standard Blancpain GT sprint race format

Calendar currently is:

Sepang International Circuit - April 2017
Chang International Circuit - May 2017
Suzuka International Circuit - June 2017
Fuji Speedway - August 2017
Shanghai International - October 2017
Sepang International Circuit - December 2017 (2hr)

I thought SRO were close to GT Asia? This seems a bit unnecessary in that context.

Suzuka and Fuji! That's interesting.

GT Asia and Super Taikyu should be worried.

Asa should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
With SRO running it, I guess the winner of this series will get an automatic entry in the Macau FIA GT World Cup. That will be more attractive to some drivers already over GT Asia.

My sneaking suspicion is that this early announcement combined with SRO's current reputation for success and expansion, is a pretty heavy suggestion to GT ASIA that they should come to SRO for a merger deal before they get destroyed in open competition?

GT Asia are struggling big time for grids this year, don't think I've seen more than 13 cars per race.

And think of the teams in it, Absolute Bentley, Clearwater, Phoenix....

Those kind of high quality teams are surely going to jump ship if the SRO is even just slightly more appealing

Gruppe M will be running 3x AMG GT3 for this series.

Dagys also suggesting the grid will mostly be European teams.

So can we expect Phoenix moving from GT Asia to Blancpain Asia Cup

Two more Lamborghinis from FFF Racing

So we are half way towards a decent grid size!

Curious to see the crossover with GT Asia and how well their do for grids this year! Seen no confirmations yet

Another gem in the S365 Dubai notebook today-

Frank Yu of Craft Bamboo said they will be running up to 5 cars in Asia this year, up to 3 Cayman GT4s and the previous 2 911 GT3-Rs.

The decision of Blancpain GT Asia, or the GT Asia Series is yet to be made. Based primarily on which is likely to have a better grid

Clearwater are swapping Gt Asia for Blancpain Asia, and bringing the McLaren 650s back for Bell and Richy Wee

Also they have acquired a 570s GT4 for potentially later season running
