Pe 018

Hi
I am looking for any old photos, race results, news clippings etc for chassis no PE018 VP commodore that was originally owned by Ian Love then went to Shaun Walker, and then to Mike Imrie.
I currently own the car and am trying to find some history.

Not sure if it is correct or not, but I believe this car was owned and raced by Shane Beikoff in the Development Series in 2002 and 2003. Last time I looked, I'm pretty sure there are photos of his VS Commodore on the Shane Beikoff Racing website www.shanebeikoffracing.com.au and maybe it's worth giving Shane a call as, if it is the same car, I'm pretty sure Shane knows more about it than almost anybody.

This would'nt happen to be the chassis that Don Watson perished in by any chance? If not, does anyone know what chassis # Don was driving? I'm also interested in the history of that car before the crash.

The Don Watson chassis was PE 023 and there was not a lot of history prior to the crash.
I think he may have debuted the car at Winton in that same year.

Where and when did Don Watson die again? Was PE 023 a VP?

PE 030 - interesting user name. Do you own this particular model?

Don died @ Bathurst during practice in 1994. His brakes failed on the approach to Caltex Chase & he hit a tyre barrier. The barrier was moved back before Bathurst '95 & there is now a run-off area where the old barrier used to be.

Very sad day that one.

P.S. I can't remember if it was a VP or VR. I think it may have been a VP.

Wow, didn't know that. Where abouts in the Chase was this barrier? If it was 94 it would have been a VP for sure.

It was 9 minutes into the first practice session on the Thursday (Day 2 in those days) when Don's front left brake rotor shattered and he lost brakes and air pressure in his front left tyre and went straight ahead at very high speed into an earth & tyre wall that separated the run off into two separate gravel traps back then. The car then flipped and ended up upside down on top of the remnants of the wall. You can see where the wall used to be as they left that area as plain earth/grass when the wall was bulldozed prior to the '95 event as an access track for recovery vehicles.

I'm pretty sure it was a VP at the time although it was pretty easy to go from VN to VP and so on in those days.

PE023 was built as a VP and debuted at round 6 at Winton in May 94. Watson raced it at the remaining ATCC rounds (Eastern Creek, Mallala, Barbagello & Oran Park) and at Sandown and Bathurst with Ian Love co-driving. At the time of the accident it was the newest Perkins built car.

PE018 was built for Ian Love and he raced it at the Barbagello ATCC rounds in 93 - 95 and presumably at aother Barbagello events, I recall that John Bowe co-drove with him in the annual 300 km event on year.

It was sold to Shaun Walker who raced it at Barbagello in 96 and in 97 at Albert Park, Calder, Barbagello and Round 3 of the Amscar series at Eastern Creek.

It was sold to Mike Imrie who debuted it at Albert Park in 98 and raced it the Queensland round of the 00 ATCC. Rodney Crick raced it at Indy in 00 and Dean Croswell at the Bathurst Development series.

It was then sold to Shane Beikhoff and raced by Beikhoff and Phil Foster in the Development series in 02 and 03.

PE18

Hi there,
If you send me you email I have a couple photos of that car when I run it in the bathurst Konica round in Europcar colours, we also tried to qualify the car at the last Shell round at Sandown 01, which I think was the last time a VS raced in a ATCC!
cheers Dean

Cheers for the info. I did'nt realise is was such a new car.
I was working for the 'Don' at the time, and it was a very tragic time. I have wondered the history of that car for a long time. (And his VL's if anyone knows!!).

Back on topic, what are the plans for PE18, zxrno1?

Don co-drove the second Car Trek VL at Bathurst and Wellington in 92 in with Tic-Tac sponsorship, I am not sure of the origin of this chassis.

Vaguely recall that Don drove PE010 at the Adelaide GP in 93 and destoyed it in an accident. PE010 was raced by Perkins in the 90 enduros, Graham Moore at Bathurst in 91 and by Perkins throughout 92 and in the first 2 rounds of 93 before being leased to John Trimble.

I remember hearing Don had a big crash at one of the major meetings, and Adelaide GP rings a bell. I know he had CAT sponsorship on a VL around that time, so that must have been it.

Zx are we talking about the yellow vp??????

If so it almost burnt to the ground at the wannaroo 300 one year with farrell behind the wheel.

John Bowe drove it the year after I think and it had a good life over here in the west.

I got images but there is not much hope of finding them in the near future.

Ask a few questions and I my be able to help with some Idea of car and drivers of the era over here.

Still remember the day perkins beached Alfs sister car! lol

Did up until late last year along with PE 027.

Now just got PE 039 sitting in the shed.

Maybe time for a name change

Driving down the Hume on the weekend and I passed a B-double with Don Watson transport all over it. Cleanest rig on the highway!

Tribute to the people Don had with him that the company is still trucking along without his guidance...

Indeed. Noelene has done an amazing job (and all the staff mind you).

Sorry for being off topic, but this one is close to my heart.

Back on topic, what are the plans for PE018?

At the moment I am having some fun with it in the HSV club Victoria at our club motorsport rounds, learning to drive it, along with 3 or 4 other ex Perkins cars, but the AMRS TCC looks like a lot of fun so I might try that later in the year at Winton (August) if all goes well.

It could be the same car, I have been told that Ian Love had it yellow with Coco's resturant sponcorship, but I don't know how accurate that is

if it was the yellow beast it did burn at one point!

not sure if it was a new car straight to love or a old alf car though.

Love has still got COCCOs by the way so if you need to ask him just get there number and get in contact.

Never know your luck mate. Might take abit of work to get to him though.

Somewhere in the back of my mind a little hammer is telling me there was a thread somewhere a while ago and someone posted heaps of info on either the PE or Dencar chassis'.

I'm not sure where but it's either here, Procar, Conrod or V8Central. Someone out there might remember where to look or you can do a search I s'pose.
