User names

Quote:
Is there a restriction on the user name I choose ?

We try not to interfere with your choice of username, but we do have several rules relating to your choice:

You may not choose a name which is offensive or in any way libellous
You may not choose a name which infers that you are someone else - whether that be another user on this website or elsewhere, or a driver, team boss, or anyone else in the motorsport industry.
You may not choose a name which promotes your website or product in any way.
Failure to adhere to these basic rules will, depending upon the seriousness of the infaction, lead to your user name being amended, or your posting rights removed. If you accidently choose a user name which breaks any of these rules, please drop me an email and I will edit your user details for you.
name that interferes - AMoffat, AlanJones, enzo.

name that promotes busines/website - redshoes, f1grandprixshop.com, RaceTime.

im not having a go at any body, it just seems in fashion

but arent they breaking the rules?

I can't vouch for all of these, but I do know for a fact that the proviso about drivers' names is relatively recent - implemented in response to a couple of impostors who actually tried to pass themselves off as BTCC competitors on the forum.

Both AJ and Moff have been members since before that one blew up, so at the time they weren't in contravention of any site policy.

Redshoes' website is actually a derivation of his own personal nickname - Redshoes. If you know him socially, it would not be unnatural to use it, or some derivation of it. I do. So again, the website came later.

Enzo could be enzo's given name - or he could be denoting allegiance with any one of thousands of Enzos, Ferrari, Buscaglia, Calderari, etc. I don't think there's a problem there. He's not purporting to be anyone but the enzo we know here.

As for the others, no idea - but the main point of the rule is, as I have said before, to stamp out people trying seriously to pass themselves off as someone they ain't.

Does this go some way to answering your concerns?

That probably describes why I didn't remember that particular restriction in the rules.

I really don't see any problem with invoking the memory of a great man (or woman) through your username. Anymore than invoking the memory of a Torana. But to stay within the rules. But wait a minute...

And I am not trying to attack you personally, the question you have raised is a good one. What is the purpose of the '69' in your username? Could that not be a reference that contravenes the first point in the rules you have quoted?

Fair enough,

And to stay within the rules as they are now, I would become:

"the poster previously known as..."

I'm not really sure just how a name can interfere with anything!

Actually, it was my nickname growing up, and easy for me to remember!

Yes but you lose the Lower case "f", not "F", and it is a different typeface....
